A tragic early-morning fire aboard the cruise ship World Legacy has left one crew member dead and prompted a full passenger evacuation as the vessel approached Singapore on Friday.
According to the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA), the blaze broke out around 4:00 a.m. local time in a lounge area on Deck 9. Emergency teams — including marine firefighters from the Singapore Civil Defence Force — responded quickly and extinguished the fire.
Passengers Rushed to Muster Stations
Guests onboard were awakened by alarms and crew instructions as smoke spread through parts of the ship. Standard emergency procedures were immediately activated, with passengers directed to muster stations and instructed to wear life jackets.
As a precaution, authorities carried out a phased evacuation once the situation was stabilized. Passengers were transferred ashore to HarbourFront Ferry Terminal, where paramedics conducted health checks and treated those affected by smoke exposure or stress.
The vessel was carrying 271 passengers and 388 crew members at the time of the incident. Four passengers were transported to the hospital for further evaluation. No additional serious injuries among passengers or crew were reported.
Crew Member Loses Life
One Indonesian crew member died as a result of the fire. Officials have not released details about the crew member’s position on board. The Indonesian Embassy in Singapore has been notified.
Ship Moved for Inspection
Following the incident, World Legacy was moved to Raffles Reserved Anchorage within the Port of Singapore for further assessment and investigation. A safety zone was established around the vessel during emergency operations.
A skeleton crew remains onboard to maintain essential systems and assist with inspections, while other crew members are being disembarked.
Authorities have launched an investigation into the cause of the fire.
