10 am San Juan Flight

We are getting ready to book our flight for next May's Adventure of the Seas cruise. Is a 10am flight too early?? This past year, we used RC's transportation to and from airport and it was terrible. We waited almost an hour at the airport for our baggage to arrive. It came on a seperate truck from the bus. Miserable! Next year we are taking a cab.

Thanks, Kelly & Bryan

If you ask the cruise line they will tell you that ten AM is the earliest possible flight that you can make, so I suppose it's possible. But if you ask me, I'd say that's way too early ! I wouldn't book anything earlier than 12:30, and even that would make a cautious person like me a bit nervous.

I always heard the cruiseline tells you 1pm.............I think you would have too much stress with a 10am flight......

When are you going ??We're going on the AOS May 4th.........have a 1:25pm flight home.......

Anythings possible but I would'nt even dream of a 10 a.m. flight from San Juan. I would even be worried about a 12 o'clock flight from that place. :wave

Sure it is possible, but like the others, a tad stressful for me. I too thought it was 1:00pm is what the cruise lines tell you.

I've been through the San Juan port and airport many times, and I have occasionally arrived early enough for a 10:00 AM flight -- but not often enough to make me think seriously about booking one. Just one jerk who fails to show up to settle his bill, one person trying to bring drugs back in a suitcase, or one glitch at airport security is all it will take to make you miss your flight. Relax and book later is my advice.

I agree with all of the above posters. That is cutting it kinda close, though if I were you, I would grab my own taxi and get to the airport that way. That 's what we always do. Keep in mind that the main highway from the port to the airport is heavily traveled, and if there might be a traffic tie up, you'll be screwed. Better yet, try and spend a day in SJ before you head back home. If you can make it work, you'll enjoy the extra day and Old SJ is a great city.

Just to double check my memory, I called the cruiseline and asked them, what's the earliest SJU flight that they would recommend booking for after the cruise. They did indeed say, "ten".

That being said, they are not the ones who will be biting their nails to the quick, when customs stalls the debarkation.

Whenever we sail out of San Juan, I consider two PM to be the perfect time for a flight. That way hubby and I can wake on our own time, have a nice relaxed breakfast, and take a leisurely walk around the promenade to say one last goodbye to "our" ship. Then we find a nice comfy spot, and await our color call.

So when I hear them call the same person to come to the purser's desk, for the seventeenth time, I can just relax. And when the traffic slows to a crawl on the way to the airport, who cares. And when we get to the airport, and have to wait in the first line, where you wait to get into the second line, which eventually lets you get into the security line, well by then, I've been know to start growling, but at least I'm not panicing.

And more important than that, I'm thankful not to be in the line where you go to buy new tickets home for tomorrow.

We've done both - the 10am flight and the 1:30pm flight. I was so nervous the last day and night about making the 10am flight (we did, and we didn't have any problems) it's not worth ruining my last day/night on the ship. Yep - we get home a little later with the later flight, but at least my sanity is in check.
On another note, we've learned that for us, paying the extra for a taxi instead of the ship transportation is well worth it. Our luggage always arrives with us, we don't have to wait for a bus or van to fill up -- and we just feel a whole lot better about our transer experience. It's really not that much more, especially if our grap another couple and share a cab/van.

Thanks to everyone for their input. We've decided to book a later flight. Problem is, Delta is either 10am or 3:30pm. If we take the later flight it gets us back to DC at 11pm at night, but it might be worth not having the stress of having a glitch thrown in that morning. After this past year on Adventure leaving San Juan, we thought we would never want to leave out of San Juan again. But live and learn. That was after the fact that RC booked the show "America's Next Top Model" to be filmed on our ship in May, and no one told us or our travel agent. When we arrived, SUPRISE!! Many areas of the ship were off limits to us at various times and the only day at Sea, 1/2 of the upper deck was blocked off for filming. We were even asked to leave the hot tub at 11pm so they could film the show. Many people complained, and the shows staff was very rude. We wrote a letter to RC about the issue. We got a call 2 weeks later apologizing and a letter along with a $250 per person gift certificate to be used within a year. They were extremely apologetic and understanding. We enjoyed the ship so much, we are doing it again with a different itinerary. The staff was one of the nicest we've come across so far.

With the traffic in San Juan there is NO way I would risk a 10 AM flight. As the others have stated take the stress out of it and book an afternoon flight. :thumb
