Looking for information on our ports. We want to do things on our own, not with the scheduled ship tours. Alittle sight seeing and beach activity are great for starters. Where can we rent a van ( the best deal ) and what are the must see and must do? Anyone found the best shops, the girls in our group would love you. We visit St Thomas (megans bay) and Dominica, Barbados, Isla Margarita and Curacao. We like snorkling and physical things as well as just kicking back at a great view piont. Just trying to get the most out of our ten days.
So anyone who has been there, please write or email me direct

Golfman,

The cost of renting a car or van can be as much as $100 a day. Plus, you'll pay $20 or so for a temporary drivers license.

You might want to pick up a book, "Caribbean Ports of Call". That is packed with information like you are asking. It's published by Fodor's, and is available online at bn.com, or amazon.

Just to remind you if you are sailing after March 1 you will need a passport. All sailings to Barbados require one as of that date or you cannot board the ship in the first place.

On Barbados grab a taxi and have him take U on an Island Tour. A stop at Sam Lords Castle is nice and then heading off to the Basheba area for a drink at the Edge Water Inn ( Edgewater Inn Link ). Then possibly heading over to The west coast (calm side) for a few hours at the SandPier Inn for use of their beach / pool will fill out your day. On Dominica we did the Isalnd Tour in Jan. with stops at Trafalgar Falls and The Emerald Pool and had a Gr8 time. On St. Thomas we always head over to the lovely Island of St. Johns for a day at IMO some of the nicer beaches in the Caribbean (Trunk Bay or Cinnamon Bay) and then still have enough time to do some shopping at the Havensight Mall are near the pier.

We were in Dominica 3 years ago. At that time, there were private individuals all over the place wanting to take you around. The 4 of us "hired" a local gal and a van driver. They took us EVERYWHERE, and to places the run of the mill tours didn't go to. We had a blast, and it stands out in my mind as one of my favorites. They were kind, patient, and eager to please. They charged us $50 for 3-4 hours. Needless to say, because of the awesome time we had, they got a nice tip. From this one experience, I say there is nothing like the locals to show you around.

Please post a review when you get back; we're taking the same cruise later on this year and would love to hear about the ports of call, ship, etc.
Happy Cruising.....Anita

Thanks for the tip about passports. Princess states you can still get on the ship but will not be allowed to visit that port of call.
