Trying to decide what to do, take excursion tour of St. Thomas or St. John beach at Trunk Bay. Want to save a little time for shopping. On the island for approx. 8 hrs. Any suggestions? Snorkeling not a priority but tropical scenery is.

They have a very nice helicopter tour over the island. We really enjoyed it and it leaves plenty of time for shopping as well.

Going to Trunk Bay will involve a cab ride to the ferry dock, a possible wait of up to an hour there and a ride to St. John of at least 20 minutes, followed by a taxi ride to Trunk
Bay. The return trip will follow the same routine. While we did all of that and still did some shopping in Charlotte Amalie, we were also fortunate in that we had no long waits for the ferry (you gotta know the schedule ahead of time). If snorkeling is not a priority, I'd opt for a cab ride to Megan's Bay (takes less than 10 minutes) and spend the morning there. It is rated as one of the most beautiful beaches in the world and has all the facilities there that you could want. Take a cab back to town and shop 'til you drop before returning to the ship.

My very first time to St. Thomas we took a trolley ( open air cab) up to Paradise Mt. and enjoyed the scenery and the cab driver took us to the beach and then we still had time to shop!! I plan on doing the same thing and this is my 6th time to St. Thomas! ( mind you it has been 7 years since I ve been!! Damn kids!!)

I love St. John and plan to go back on my next cruise. My only regret is that I didn't spend more time there. We spent most of the time we had at Trunk Bay. It's a beautiful beach which has a fee, but it is worth it, there is no one on the beach trying to sell you anything. They also rent snorkle gear there. We didn't leave the ship until late in the morning and we still had time to shop in St Thomas when we got back. (Next time I will leave earlier in the morning and take the ferry over to St John) Here is a link for St John http://www.usvi.net/
If your looking for tropical scenery then you should really head to St John, it's really beautiful.

When we were on the Grand in May, we took a day sail on the Winfred (www.sailwinifred.com) We have been to St. Thomas many times but this was definitely the high point of any of our trips there. This is a wooden sailboat that only takes 6 passengers. Includes cont. breakfast, full lunch and open bar, snorkeling and some of the most beautiful scenery imaginable. We still had time for shopping afterwards and even took the cable ride.

A fabulous way to get away from the crowds and enjoy a relaxing day on a beautiful boat.

We did the Helmet Dive and it was awsome!!! You do not need to be a diver as my wife and two daughters did it with ease!
