2 hour port visit on Norwegian Sun. Why??

We are scheduled on the Sun on October 30th and I just noticed that the Tuesday itinerary includes a 2 hour stop from 8am to 10am at Playa del Carmen, then a 2 hour trip to Cozumel where we remain until 10pm that evening.

Does anybody have any idea why they even both to stop in Play Del Carmen? Doesn't seem to make a lot of sense to me.

Because the last port visited is Roatan, the furthest away from Houston, it takes two days to return to Houston. If you check out the Dream's itinerary, Cancun is the last port visited, and can return to Houston in one day. When a ship docks at a port depends if there is a space to dock.
The two hour Playa stop allows passengers taking shore excursions on the Mexician mainland a quicker departure. It's over a three hour bus ride to many popular Mayan ruins, especially Tulum. Then consider the over three hour bus ride back, plus the ferry ride to Cozumel. You really don't get much time to explore these ruins.
So that's why there's a two hour stop at Playa, to get passngers off the ship and on their way to the ruins quickly.

Then, when they finish their excursions on the mainland, they take the ferry to Cozumel to meet the ship. We are booked next week on the Sun and plan to do Xcaret from Playa del Carmen, then take the ferry at around 3 p.m. to Cozumel. We did this years ago on RCI. It works out nice. I just wish we could have gotten a whole day on Playa del Carmen and a whole day on Cozumel. Oh, well. We still get to cruise! Yeah!

That makes perfect sense. We've been to Cancun and Cozumel many times so we aren't planning any shore excursions, so I hadn't thought of that.

Clay - enjoy your cruise and be sure to report back here and let us know what you think of the Sun. We'll be in a Balcony (BA) cabin on the 10/30 voyage.

I guess your question about the 2 hour stop has been answered. This sometimes happens when ports included are St John's and St Thomas. They stop in St Johns pretty much just to let passengers off and on the ship goes to St Thomas for the day. Steve, I hope you enjoy the Sun as much as we did. She is a really neat ship with a wonderful crew.

We prefer Playa to Cozumel. So I would prefer to have the thing switched around. Most of the line's don't even stop at Playa anymore, it's a shame as it is much closer to Tulum. You can get your own cab and ride down ther for around 50-60 dollars. We also prefer the shopping in Playa much more reasonable and not all the pressure. Viet

You can still shop until you drop at Playa. Just take the ferry to Cozumel when you're done.

Just return from the Sun...

the reason the ship stop in Playa del carmen is to unload passengers on the tenders for the shore excursions that's all
