I'm going to be on the Volendam in Sept for their 16 day repositioning cruise with my dad. I'm just wondering am I really going to be the only one under 50 on the ship? (I'm 35) Don't get me wrong , I love hearing stories of the more experienced group. However, I have been on boats that are REAL quiet after 10pm.

As you probably know, HAL tends to attract a more mature passenger base, although; an attempt to attract younger clientel has been in the offing of late. Having said all of that, one must consider that people who go on a 16 day cruise will be those who have a lot of time, and the disposable income to do so. I am sure that you know what demographic we are talking about here. There aren't many 30 somethings that have both the time and money to go on a 16 day cruise, so I would not expect to see very many on board. I betcha that the Crow's Nest won't be shutting down at 10 PM however.

David - the rule of thumb for ANY ship and ANY cruise line...

The longer the cruise, the older the passengers!

David,

Been watching your post with interest, as we are 30 somethings sailing in December on the Volendam. After watching this and a couple of other boards for several months now, it seems very few people who post have actually sailed the Volendam recently. (There are some, but not many).Yet our early December sailing seems to be selling well (based on the prices rising over the last month)

My conclusion is that many who sail her are not message board/internet savvy type people, which leads me to believe that the average age will in fact be much older than some other cruise choices. Add in the comments of the people who replied to you so far, and I think you get the picture. As for us, since we are not big party people, it suits just fine. We also have the advantage of traveling with two friends our age, who will be excellent late night company if everyone else is already sleeping! :)

With 1400 people on board, I doubt you would be the only one under 50, but even if you are, I have to agree with Cruzman...some of the biggest 'partiers' I know are well into their 50's and beyond.

Please post a review when you get back, I am very interested about how your experience goes! Thanks.

My most recent cruise on Volendam was late May/early June 2003. She's my favorite HAL ship.

Anything I can answer?
