My sister and I are going to the Western Caribbean; Cozumel, Roatan (Honduras), Costa Maya and Pregreso (Yucatan) next January (2008) on the Voyager of the Seas. Neither one of us knows how to swim. =huh In fact my sister is afraid of the water but loves cruising. As a non-swimmer I'm not afraid of the water as long as my feet are touching bottom and the water is waist high. I think I finally talked her into taking a tour like this. I rather not pay the price of a tour to just sit in the boat and touch the Dolphins as they swim by. I want both of us to get in the water and have the Dolphins swim around us so I can take advance of getting some great photo opportunities. What is the best port on our iternary that will allow non-swimmers to take a tour like this? :help

We did the dolphin swim in Cozumel. It was a highlight for us. But not to burst your bubble, I am not sure I would suggest it for a non swimmer. You are wearing a life vest but you are treading water when you are in the water. Your feet will not be touching the bottom.

I booked through this websight. http://cozumelinsider.com/Dolphin E-mail them and see what they suggest for non-swimmers. You can try posting your question on the Community forum or the Q&A forum to get others feedback.

Thanks Suer182 - you answered my question. I guess I just have to change our plans from "swimming" with the Dolphins to booking a Dolphin Encounter Tour. I know standing on a platform watching them isn't the same as getting in the water and swimming with them but at least we will still be closer to the Dolphins than we would have been by not booking any Dolphin tours at all.

My glass is always half full and never half empty. =docdance

Not to presume but go to the YMCA and learn to swim, our local Y has adult classes. You have over six months. Conquer your fears and enjoy one of your dreams.

That being said we just did the encounter in Cozumel, I am not interested in Dolphins, but my daughter loved it. I thought it was well run and interesting. Our guide did a solid job and it was well worth the money, as the swim classes are. Whatever you decide enjoy the dolphins, it is worth the effort.

We did the royal dolphin swim also in cozumel and booked through cozumelinsider.com. There was a 7 year old in the group who did not know how to swim. The guides took him out to the dolphins where they did the pull and the superman push and they were quick to grab him when it was over. I would suggest calling them to see what they say.

I am also a very much non-swimmer, I can't even get my face wet! I did do the dolphin encounter and loved it. If you can doggy paddle you can get to the area about 20 feet from the dock where you are standing in water. If you can't then you can stay on the platform.
My suggestion is to wear water shoes, with no metal or anything to scratch the dolphin. The bad part for me was walking on the dock with my bare feet. It was kind of slippery and that scared me.
The dolphin spends time with everyone at the platform, then if you choose you can go out with it. I told my guide the I didn't swim and was scared of water in my face, so he had the dolphin do very easy things with me. I would love to do it again! Go for it!!!

Thanks JO I know my sister is going to feel much better. I felt like your message was coming from her, especially the part of even hating to get your face wet. We'll be on the cruise during her birthday (Jan. 16th - no ages please but she will be somewhere between 60 and 62 =docdance.) Because of this I want to make sure this cruise will be especially special for her.

And we are already looking for water shoes. This did bring up an interesting point for other cruisers who didn't think of wearing water shoes. I was thinking more of scratching or cutting myself on something under water than the platform being slippery, thanks for mentioning this.
