A luggage question

I understand that we are allowed to keep our luggage and have it picked up the next morning. I have always put out luggage the night before, but it may be nice to have it overnight since my daughter and her husband, who will traveling with us, always forgets to pack everything, and then I have to find space for her things in my carry on bags. Has anyone had any experience with this option, and could you offer pros or cons to this service?

DEAR ABBY:
My daughter and her husband, who will traveling with us, always forgets to pack everything, and then I have to find space for her things in my carry on bags.
--Sage

DEAR SAGE:
I don't mean to sound snarky, but if you daughter is old enough to be married, she is old enough pack her own suitcase in time. Any maybe Daddy should stop feeling he has to pick up after her.
--Abby

DEAR ANN LANDERS:
Your stupid sister just publicly sassed me in her column. What should I do?
--Sad Sage

DEAR SAD SAGE:
If my sister was that good at dishing out advice, then why was her daughter actually writing the column for the last 15 years?
--Ann

DEAR ABBY:
I've got the most wonderful father anywhere! I don't have to worry about packing my stuff because he will carry it for me in his own luggage! My husband and I can just enjoy ourselves without having to make sure we have everything. Isn't he great?
--Carefree daughter

DEAR CAREFREE DAUGHTER:
You're not six years old anymore. Cut Daddy a break and learn how to take care of your own needs. By the way, where is your husband during all this?

Tomc,

Thanks for the good laugh; I really did sound pathetic didn't I? Maybe if I put stepdaughter, it would better identify my problem. Any advice, pro or con about keeping the luggage overnight? Again, thank you for the insight to my "problem".

I really don't have an answer to your stated problem. If nobody here knows, you might ask your cabin steward as soon as things quiet down (after sailing day).

As to the advice column -- it's a serious opinion, couched in humor. As Abby (and the late Ann) would say: "Show her this column." She will refuse to go with you and you can send the travel docs to me!

7 weeks and 6 days till I'm back home (on HAL).

We have never held onto our luggage....we put it out the night before along with everyone else. No big deal IMO

Tomc,

I will show her the response, and if she decides not to go, then be there Dec. 8th for a Rotterdam cruise. Oh, by the way, you don't mind the sofa bed do you? I called first dibs on the king already.

My mother (18 cruises) always said she'd sleep in the lifeboat if that's what it took to be on a HAL ship.

Sage,

I've done it both ways...kept the luggage, and put it out the night before.

If you tell the ship you want to keep the luggage, stewards will come when you're ready to disembark and accompany you off the ship with your luggage. Certainly makes finding your bags in the terminal a lot easier! :lol

ShipMaven,

Thank you. That does sound like it would make the luggage hunt much easier. I didn't mean to sound so pathetic in my earlier post; I was just wondering what the pros and cons were of the offered service. Thank you again.

Sage,

The big pro, IMHO, is that you keep an eye on your luggage.

The con is that your [step]daughter and her husband won't learn how NOT to forget things. :grin

ShipMaven and Tomc,

I decided to share your posts with my husband, and he looked rather stunned. And then he did something that I thought was very intersting, he apologised. He said that if other people can see her this clearly, then maybe it is time he readjusted his behavior and hers. What can I say? These boards are indeed very helpful. We of course will see how long this lasts, but for now, we have a step forward. If this continues, I can see a very big suite party in my future. My humble thanks to both of you.

Sage,

Happy to help. And good luck!

Sometimes it takes the unbiased observations of others to get us to take good looks at ourselves and at our own shortcomings. ;)

putting your luggage out on the am you get off the ship is considered a suite perk

My first cruise, Maasdam, last August, I left out my bags the night before, and when I went to pick them up at the dock, one of them was SOAKED in someone else's Kaluha! Needless to say, I was kinda suprised, as the whole rest of the cruise to me was absolutely flawless (I'm a little easy to please, being in the military, but I loved every second and think it's the only way to vacate, now). When I showed someone that worked for HAL, they had me file a claim, but turns out I didn't have the insurance type that covered it.

I don't hold it against HAL, wish the person who had the Kaluha hadn't decided to pack it in the luggage, and washed the bag about a dozen times (stills smells a little, but what the hell, it's Kaluha!) :)

Needless to say, this time, I'm in a suite and I'm keeping my luggage. Hope everyone got a giggle...I'm still shaking my head over it. Thank goodness for waterproof linings!
