Has anyone been on the "12-Meter Challenge" excursion in St. Maarten? I belive it's also sometimes called the "America's Cup". Its the one where "retired" America's Cup racing sailboats (such as Dennis Connor's Stars and Stripes) are sailed by the participants. Is it a worth while excursion?

My kids and I did this excursion this past July. It has it's ups and downs and your enjoyment of it will be based on how involved you want to be and what you get to do. In a nutshell, each person will be assigned to a boat (Stars and Stripes, True North or Canada II), then when you are on your way out to the boats they will assign you a job based on your desired activity level. So if you really want to experience what it would be like to be a real crew member, be sure to tell them you want to be very active. Depending on how many people book the races, there will be some people who don't do anything but enjoy the ride (like me). My son was a grinder, was up and down and really got a workout. They provide cool beverages, and afterwards they bring you back to their shop for rum punch and a chance to buy a photo of you and your crew on the boat and perhaps a T-shirt or other souviener. We went on the first trip of the morning, so it was a bit cooler and left our afternoon open for shopping and beach time. Was it fun? I thought so, it was something we don't have around here in Wyoming.

Blusky558 - thanks for the good information. Its nice to know that you can work as hard or as little as you want. Being from Michigan (i.e., surrounded by the Great Lakes) its not too hard to find fun boating experiences. Sounds like I'll have to add this to my list. Thanks again.

I would highly reccomend this tour! We went 2 yrs. ago, and had a blast! If you like sailing, this is a once in a lifetime experience. It's like letting a regular Joe drive an Indy 500 car.

It may have been the best organized shore tour we have ever been on.

Blusky588 described the "crew" involvement very well... I was a "backstay grinder" (fairly phsysical) and Jan was "Timekeeper" (a low impact assignment, I think she also helped handing out beer at the end). The waves were 4-8", and the wind was 20-30K--so these boats were flying.

The skippers also do a fair amount of side-by-side close quarters tacking that makes it very exciting. We finished second, about 8 seconds behind.

We can't wait to do it again. It sure beats shopping!

ENJOY!
