Another Senseless Loss

Saturday morning, we had a snowfall here in SE Michigan. Nothing special, just another 1-2 inch dump. As usual, many of the local roads became a bit slippery. Again, nothing out of the ordinary.

About 6:00 am, a local ambulance team (Paramedic and EMT/Driver) were returning from a run. They see a lady spin out on a curve on the interstate. They call it in to central dispatch and go on down to the next crossover. Use their lights and cross the highway. They get to the scene, pull over as trained, blocking access to protect the victim and her vehicle. They get out and approach the lady.

Around the bend, traveling at a high rate of speed (10 over the limit for DRY conditions), comes an idiot in a big ol' SUV. He looses control, flips over and comes to a stop on top of the EMT, crushing and pinning her in the wreckage. It took over 30 minutes for the responding fire department to separate the vehicles, and winch the SUV up, out of the mud and slush the five inches necessary to extricate her mangled body fro the twisted steel. The University Hospital's SurviveFlight helicopter couldn't fly because of the weather, so the flight crew (doctor, nurse and paramedic) loaded in a ground ambulance and headed for the scene. They met Cheryl and her rescuers about halfway. She was pronounced at that time.

Cheryl Kiefer was only 23 yeas old. A former firefighter with the Columbia Township Fire Department (volunteer), this vibrant and energetic young lady had worked part time for Jackson Community Ambulance for about a year and was starting work for her Paramedic degree. She is survived by her parents, a sister and 20,000 brother and sister Michigan firefighters.

The lady who initially spun out? Extricated from her vehicle and transported to the hospital. Minor injuries. Projected full recovery.

The driver of the SUV? Not a scratch. "Charges MAY be pending ...."

I will be at the visitations today and tomorrow, the all-county walk through on Wednesday and the funeral on Thursday. And, I will be doing my best to control my anger!

So sorry to hear. Why does it seems the ones who cause the situation are never hurt.

As a fellow human being, I shake my head, and offer my prayers for this senseless death. As a mother, my heart breaks for the pain and anguish her family must be going through. As the mom of a 19 yr old who just got her EMT certification, my brain tells me to say she can't do what she wants to do so badly, but my heart also knows that she must do what she loves.

And as a person who has just a little bit of mean in them, I hope the SUV driver lives the rest of his life with thoughts of the needless death he caused, the lives he changed and never ever drives too fast for conditions again. (But I bet it makes no difference....)

Very sad indeed. A wk ago, on a trip back from Chicago, the interstate was 100% snowcovered--couldn't tell where the side of the interstate was. We had already seen a semi in a ditch & a couple of cars. As we proceeded, we fell in line behind several vehicles. A semi was in the lead & going about 40 mph. We were in a line of several cars just slowly following the semi when a car came flying past us--minutes later that car was off the road & in the ditch. As we passed the car, we could see that everyone was out of the car & seemed to be fine, just studying the situation they had gotten themselves into. Not a single vehicle pulled off the road to offer them any assistance--I guess everyone (including us) figured their stupidity got them into that situation so they could get out on their own.

Why is it that these guys in those giant 4x4's (especially the big macho pick-up trucks) feel they are above the law? They ride your bumper if you don't go at least 80 mph, and you better get out of their way. It drive me crazy...

This story is so sad, such a heartbreak for everyone. Just because one guy has to prove he can go faster than everyone else.

I'm very sorry for all the family with their loss...

Prayers for Cheryl and her family. You should never buy more vehicle than you're capable of handling. It's not the type of car, it's the type of idiot behind the wheel.

Calgon, I send my condolences to the Kiefers, as well as to Ms. Kiefer's larger firefighter family.

Board rules prevent me from voicing my opinion of the driver of the SUV.

So sorry Calgon. People don't realize their stupid, senseless acts impact on others too.

We had a Chevy Blazer, and the first winter we had it my (then) husband, the paramedic, would repeat to me every time I drove it that those things really would go in the snow, but they didn't stop better than any other car out there, in other words, SLOW DOWN!

Oh Calgon I'm so sorry to hear this. It is all too common that the rescuer becomes the victim because of foolish drivers. May she rest in peace. She had so much to give and was taken way too soon.

Along this same line, a week or so here in Ky. a pregnant lady had a minor accident on an icy road. She was ok but was concerned regarding her unborn baby and so called in the accident. An EMT responded and while a female EMT was escorting the pregnant lady to the rear of the ambulance, a large coal truck ( loaded ) slammed into them-- killed the pregnant lady outright and the EMT died very shortly after.
The news of course stated the icy road conditions caused the accident. Could it not have been from the fact that the truck was driving way too fast for a heavily loaded truck on an icy road??
I cringe everytime I hear an accident blamed on the weather. Aren't you are supposed to drive according to the weather conditions-- and not with your head up you rear inspecting you lower intestines ??? These nuts that cause these accidents should be prosecuted to the fullest. =huh

You have every right to be mad, and I don't blame you a bit. Prayers are headed to all of you for laying your life on the line every day. Charges SHOULD be filed, several in fact.
