Another tip/gift question

Does anyone bring some sort of token gift for your room steward in appreciation for what he/she does for you in addition to tipping or do you just stick to tipping? If you do the gift, what types of things have you left for your room steward?

While it might be nice to give the steward a gift, they really appreciate money that much more..........dont forget, they share a cabin and there is just so much space to put stuff............exception might be a phone card.......I know some people do that, but I still say money is the best..

I've heard that they work hard for low wages. I'm sure money is most appreciated. The phone card idea is a good one for something additional. Thanks PH. I'm starting to think I should just ask you first. lol You've been so helpful with all my questions!!

Think of how many pax they serve, if everyone brought them some token something their tiny little quarters would be filled with crap. I'd stick with cash, it would be more appreciated than anything else.

hi,
when i was on the golden princess in dec, another passenger and i, we were talking to the room steward, and he told us that he makes $40 a month, and i said no way, and he said yes, a couple of days later, he showed me his contract and sure enough he makes $40 a month, I told him thats not right, so i tipped him big time.

Phone cards are a great idea, but you may be buying a card that has a high minute rate for the country they are calling. Cash is best, they know where the bargains are for phone cards, etc.

It's a shame that they get paid so little. I'm planning on just bringing cash. Thanks for all your input.

"paid so little"

All things, in life, are relevant. I know couples that have worked and still work for HAL who have:

Bought a home
Bought her parents a home
Put three kids through college
Have a retirement fund.

As a bartender and a waitress.

Jobs with cruise lines are HARD work, but they are highly sought after positions because if you have a work ethic, you can make a far better living at sea than you can in your native country.

Of course, the money they make goes VERY far in the countries they come from.................
