Well folks, a lot has happened since Fri eve. Late afternoon call from dr that said CT scan showed something happening in pelvic area & an elevated PSA. Said we had to get to urologist for prostate biopsy. I refused to go to our previous urologist & they understood my feelings so we were sent to a new dr who got us in at 7:45 this a.m. This dr explained that the 1st place prostate cancer goes is to the lymph nodes in the pelvic area & to the spine which is exactly what the CT scan is showing but they won't know 100% until the biopsy tomorrow afternoon (said we would have an answer by the end of the wk). The good news is that they are going to SEDATE him; he is so relieved that he doesn't have to worry about pain. Urologist said CT shows no cancer in pancreas, liver, kidneys, etc. If we would be lucky enough to get a good report from tomorrow's biopsy I asked what would they do next because we had been told they wouldn't do the bone biopsy til they find where they think the cancer is from. Urologist explained that cancer in the bone can just develope on its own but it is VERY RARE & that is why they try to track it down. I want to get to the bone biopsy because the indications are that it is cancer & if so I want to start treatmeant. But until we get the bone biopsy nothing is 100% so I intend to hold onto that for now. I do know DH has lost 25 lbs over the past 3 mo & lower back is giving him more pain. I'm tired of what they are thinking it is & just want to get to the point & chart a plan from here on out. Internist office called this afternoon & said as soon as we get results from this biopsy they will schedule the bone biopsy--no more tests. Without question if this is what they think--cancer in the spine--he has had it for close to 2 yrs as that is how long he's complained about his knees not working; my hope is to do something to slow the process down. Will let you all know when they finally give us a 100% answer.

Kathy, I avoid that awful 'what if' game whenever possible. Just hold on to your faith girlfriend. When you have something concrete to evaluate, then you can map out your plan of action. Meanwhile, get as much rest as possible, and please make the effort get copies of all test and lab results and be ready to take them for a second opinion if it seems logical to both of you to do so. This NEVER hurts because you MUST have confidence in your medical team if you have a chance of maintaining any peace during this whole process. We are our own best advocates.

One thing that I can share that was very reassuring for me: My surgeon (who was highly recommended by a friend) had a whole team of oncology specialist, my chemo and oncology radiology men, who all reviewed my case together before they made that final decision as to what would be best in my own case. They all presented their prognosis and treatment recommendations to me, but the final choices were mine alone to make so I was glad that I had done my homework. Thank you Google. LOL. Since my hospital is a teaching hospital, and all of my doctors are teachers at Stanford as well, I had full confidence in their experience and expertese. And all of their residents who were involved with any procedures were hand picked by my doctors straight from stanford and were top notch in keeping themselves up to date on the very latest in their field. Hope this helps a little to encourage you to do your homework, and assign a trusted friend to help you do research on your doctors, treatments, etc as well.

Tell hubby he can play my favorite surgery game and make mental notes of how many miles of pipes he sees on the ceiling as he rides the gurney from the prep room down that long corridor to surgery. LOL it's absolutely fascinating and can be a fun way to keep his mind occupied and calm. So glad they are letting him sleep through the biopsy.

One note of advice, Ask the head nurse to please have someone from the hospital staff run to the pharmacy and pick up any pain meds for him before you head home. this is a wonderful service that many hospitals offer and they will do this for you if you ask.

Tks Kathy for keeping us updated. I'm sure that everyone who reads about your experience will be remembering some very important concepts from what you have been sharing: Not only the technical stuff, but your own feelings as well.

Hang tough Kathy as you play the waiting game. That is always the most nerve wracking part for me. Time for a litte R&R girlfriend.
Hugs, Mari

Oh Kathy, this is a step in the right direction. Getting this thing licked, whatever it ends up being!

I can't add any wisdom, but just know we are all here for you and continue to be here!

Mariposa, unfortunately, you've been there, done that first hand. Your advice makes so much sense, for everyone, whether they are fighting a big fight or small fight; knowledge is power! You could teach a class on how to be an advocate for ourselves when it comes to medical issues! :)
