Just curious since no one has posted about cruises this weekend? Does not look good with Rita bearing down. Haven't heard anything from Carnival yet. Does anyone have any news fron them?

CNN just said it's now a cat 5, that's calming down? no where seems safe with 86 f /30 deg celcius water temps.

Yep, she is a cat. 5. The Weather Channel suggests that she may weaken slightly as she approaches the coast, but, as with Katrina, the potential for catastrophic damage is very likely. The biggest question is exactly where Rita makes landfall. For Galveston, a landfall near and to the south is the worst case scenerio, and that seems to be the consensus of the forecasters right now. Having just been through Katrina, I would strongly advise everyone who is potentially affected by this storm to please get out of harm's way. This one spells serious trouble!

Carnival's web site says they will have an update Thursday afternoon. We have neighbors out on the Conquest right now.

We need to get in the enviromental agreement as a country to help control this global warming or it will just get worse. I just fell in love with cruising and am now going to have to deal with killing hurricanes.

GALVESTON ARRIVAL / DEPARTURES – SATURDAY AND SUNDAY

We are currently evaluating our plans for Galveston this weekend. We do not expect to make a decision on the required itinerary changes until Friday afternoon. However, the Elation cruise on Saturday, September 24 and the Carnival Conquest cruise on Sunday, September 25 will not depart Galveston before Monday, September 26.

In addition, the Elation September 19 cruise and the Carnival Conquest September 18 cruise will not arrive back into Galveston until Monday, September 26 at the earliest. Please check back here periodically and we will provide an update as new information becomes available.

Versley,
My PVP at Carnival called me with the same information, no departures till Monday at the earliest. He is going to call me back again at 9AM tomorrow. A lot depends on where Rita comes ashore and how much damage occurs. Try not to be too disappointed. No big whoop to us when we sail. He assured me we would not lose our money,. hope this helps.

Thanks cbug. If it is like they have done in the past I would assume our 5 day cruise would turn into a 3 day cruise to no where. They will want to get the ship back on schedule. AND....That's if Galveston is open on Monday.

Also considering the way the traffic looked leaving today and that all that traffic has to come back, probably at the same time we are trying to get there, I don't think we will chance it. Some people were sitting 9 hours to go 10 miles! We'd probably miss the ship! 2 million people and us trying to go the same place. Not pretty........

I hope they decide soon and offer a refund.
