We are looking at Western cruises for our 15th anniversary next year. I am seeing the ports of Roatan, Honduras & Santo Tomas, Guatemala showing up. I can find little to no information on these ports and any available excursions. While I like the idea of going somewhere newer for tourists and not over populated I am afraid of there being little to do there. What is other cruisers experience with these ports and any available excursions. We are happy to be able to just venture the island ourselves if it is safe and walkable. Thanks.

I have been to Roatan a couple of times--last time about a year ago. Roatan is, in my opinion a great stop. It's not overly developed at this point but " progress" is catching up. If I understand it correctly they are , or maybe have by now, expanded the dock area so two ships can dock at once, wherein last year only one could dock at a time.
The main drag is close to the pier and there will be plenty of taxis willing to take you wherever you want to go. There's a shopping area right close to the pier that's kinda funky, but that's my kind of place. You can haggle and bargain, but it's pretty cheap to begin with and it's a poor place, so I usually just bargain a little and let them win.
We took our own tour around in a cab--there's a village area called West End that's neat--dirt road alongside the ocean--lots of shops, dive shops, a couple decent restaurant / bars out over the water, etc. Check that out. There's a place called the Cameo shop that's interesting if you're into that kind of thing. Water sports, diving, snorkeling, etc. is big at Roatan.
Re/safety, I have never known of anyone having a problem there--just use common sense--don't be wondering off too far by yourself, etc. One never knows. If you like a lush, green island that's not overly developed like a a St. Thomas, you will probably like Roatan.
Re/ Santo Tomas, I too have asked about that place and never been able to get any info. on it so apparently few ships other than HAL stop there-- hopefully this will help some--enjoy Roatan--let us know about Santo Tomas.

Roatan is one of my favourite ports. The best thing to do there is Fins and flippers. It is a little private island that you can see from the ship.A 5 minute walk from the ship is a place to catch a ferry to the island. I think we booked ahead. A day pass is about $20 per person. They have a nice restaurant and bar. Food was good, portions were huge and prices were good. They have a nice freshwater pool, hot tub, showers and the cleanest restrooms I have seen in any port. The island has a nice beach but there are some weeds. They have a dock that you can snorkel from and the snokeling is amazing! They have beautiful gardens. Because the island is private there are no venders harassing you on the beach.
