Just wondering if anyone has any suggestions as what there is to do in St.Lucia? I would love to go to the Beach and also do some snorkeling, but ideally would not want to spend more than 30 mins travelling to the location. Any help would be great!!!! Thanks.

There's lots to do in St. Lucia--snorkeling, biking/hiking the rain forest/ sailboat excursions and the ever trusty cab/bus tour. St. L is one of my favorite islands in the Carib. It's lush and mysterious with those two volcanoes rising from one end of the island. It's been awhile since we've had a cruise that included this beautiful island on its itinerary, but I remember roads that are twisty and bumpy! Your travel time to an excursion point depends on where your ship will dock--I seem to recall there are two possible ports in St. L. Your best bet for figuring out what you'll want to do is to see what the cruise line offers and compare that with other offers. One place to search from is www.shoretrips.com/. The frustrating thing is that none of these will tell you what you want to know, namely how far from the ship will you have to travel. Maybe other posters can help. You could always try contacting the ship's shore excursion office.

We rented a taxi for $40 in l999. First we went to Caribelle Batik where they paint fabric using melted wax then dye it. Next we went to Reduit Beach(red wee). The driver dropped us off at the St. Lucian Rex where we walked through the open air lobby to the beach. We used their bar and restrooms.

OK, I know you don't want to spend a long time getting somewhere. But the most spectacular snorkeling is towards the south of the island, and getting there is incredibly beautiful. If your ship offers a sailboat or catamaran cruise to Soufriere or Anse Chastanet, go for it. You'll get to see the rugged coastline and the Pitons from the water. You'll feel like you're in Hawaii. Anse Chastanet is unbelievable, and I've gone diving there and snorkeling there many times, and I'd go again tomorrow!! There also is/was a tour where you sail to Soufriere, go to the "drive-through" volcano, see the sulphur springs, eat lunch at a local place overlooking the Pitons, and make 2 snorkeling stops. It was relaxing and so beautiful! Have a great trip!

Thanks everyone for your info.

gummie22...do you know how long it takes to go to Anse Chatanet and how much it would cost to go by taxi? I wouldn't mind joining the tour that Princess is currently offering but they only give you one hour to snorkel (the tour is 3 hours in total but I've heard that it takes approximately 1 hour to get to Anse Chatanet).

We will be going to St Lucia in Jan. We were planning on doing the Caribbean Pirates Extravaganza through the cruise line. It includes a sail on the Brig Unicorn to Pigeon Island where you can snorkel, swim or go exploring Fort Rodney. It sounds like fun, has anyone actually done this excursion? Terri

We are going to do the sail and snorkel for the Pitons on a Catamaran tour and most likely through the cruise line Princess, in February on the Golden Princess...half of our joy is the exhilaration of the Catamaran tour itself..these islands are glorious..and we adore being on a CAT..the snorkeling is just as wonderful but an hour and 1/2 of snorkeling is plenty for us..it's all in what you want. We've snorkeled all over the Carib..but we are fortunate to get to sit in Aruba every other year for 2 weeks .and snorkel every day..some people want several hours to snorkel or sit on a beach..=shrug hope you find the tour you like but we love the "getting there" as well as the snorkel / beach time too...:thumb.Happy cruising....Joanne.

We did a land/sea excursion and though it was great to see the volcano and the rain forest, the bus ride there made me car sick with it's steep twists and turns. The return trip by catamaran was great fun - beautiful sights, swimming, music, dancing, rum punch!

Sounds like I did the same tour you mentioned, Rosie. I think Princess has changed that tour and now it's over and back by Catamaran. That's what I'm going to do. Woooohoooo!!

Definitely do the catamaran, we once did the land tour and my gosh that is the longest 37 mile ride I have ever taken. While it is beautiful, it is a very slow and twisty ride.

I know you said beach but . . .

The BEST tour we ever did on any trip was the land & sea to the pitons. The land portion is a bit windy twisty but they take you to a volcano! The smell is awful but it was sooooo incredible to think about where you were walking & how the island was formed. It really hit home when you see the pitons. We enjoyed the botanical gardens too but they were very crowded. The other "stops" were not so great. The authentic lunch was delicious. Then the best part was the catamaran sail to a snokeling location. You could swim to the black sand beach if you wanted.
