Anybody Done El Yunque On Own?

We are going to be in San Juan for our Galaxy Cruise in July, from 7am to 4pm. We would like to do some hiking in El Yunque rain forest, but the ship tour description only includes about 25 minutes walking time... not near enough for us. We don't want to spend that much time on a bus, since research shows it's about a 45 minute trip there and 45 minutes back. Other organized tours we've checked out are about the same. We know which hiking trails we're interested in, and that will tie up a couple of hours on the trails. We don't want to take up more than 5 hours, and that's counting on leaving at about 8am.

We're looking for advice from anyone who has done the rain forest on their own. What transportation did you use? Are the taxi's reliable, and if so, how much does it cost? How about rental cars and driving on this island? Avis and Hertz have locations in Condado, but are there any rental places closer to the piers?

Any information would be appreciated.

We took the ship's tour but I think it would be easy enough to do on your own. The tours tend to stop at the local tourist traps for "rest stops" which wastes a bit of time. The tour bus stopped at three different points of interest and there was very little walking involved. Mostly picture taking opportunities. I think it would be fun to rent a car and do it on your own.
