This stop located in the Dominican Republic is on our next cruise. Has anyone out there been here? I've read some traveler reviews of a site called Altos de Chavon. Unfortunately, all anyone seems to want to write about is where they ate when visiting this artist's colony. That's interesting to a point, but I'd like to know more about the village itself. So if you've got reviews good or bad, I'd like to hear them. And OK, you can tell me about your favorite restaurant there too!

I have been to Altos de Chavon twice.

It is a beautiful artist retreat built atop a hill top overlooking a lush forest and river below. On arriving you thing the site is a couple hundred years old - later you find out it was built in 1976 and has been used as a movie set. Lots of beautiful scenery and cute little shops. You can properly see the total village in an hour or two. There are lots of restaurants with great views. In the evening they have a performances at the 5,000 seat open air amphitheatre. May not be much - but it is the most activity within 100 miles of the port.

See following links for the official site:

That show is called the Kandela Light Show and is WELL WORTH the price of admission... very enjoyable performers in a wonderful setting.

Hey have you seen Alicia Key's video KARMA? it was filmed in Altos de Chavon.... it is lovely! Parson's has an art school there. Hope you like art, it has a roman-like amphitheater (sp)

It is tropical and hot, but the lush fauna helps out.

Kandella is great if your there at night...and across the way is Bantrys.. a little shop that sells items (dreses, shirts, hankies) made and decorated by Dominican women.. The ampitheatre is where Frank Sinatra and the is it three or four Tenors have sung,,, Cushions are provided..The other thing you can do is hire a guide (green shirts are supposed to be less $$) and go into La Romana...to the supermercado and stock up on Santo Domingo coffee beans (about $2.00 a pound) and it makes great presents and can be frozen, pure vanilla and 151 proof rum..lol. visit the flea market and the lovely church in town. We also buy an ice cream across from the school and sit in the zolca (park) watching everybody go by.. La Romana is a lovely little town... oh yes.. if your into cigars you can by the best cigars in the D.R. in the supermarket. as good if not better than Cuban.. Oh yes.. we are going back to a resort in La Romana in February....love that little place
