Antron: Sadly there are some pilots determined to "fall on their sword" (ie strike which would be the end of Northwest and leaving a lot more folks than just pilots out of work)...but hopefully they are in the minority.
Personally, I would like to know the whole story. I don't like articles that say "we took a 39% cut" or they are asking for 300 million in concessions. A person can not make an informed opinion with those kinds of stats. 39% of what. ($30,000 a year or $250.000 a year.) Even after these cuts, Northwest pilots are paid 28% above the norm. Now these new talks are trimming most of that., bot not all..so they would still be paid "above the average wage" for their field.
The bottom line is that airline pilots are not the rare commodity they used to be and the aviation business is not the prestigeous way of travel it used to it. It is plain transportation and pilots are a dime a dozen. With downsizing in the industry, there are no pilot jobs to go to earning near what they earn now. If they strike they are basically "retiring" and losing a good portion of their pension because the government "subs" pension would not be near what the Northwest pension is.
Let's just hope that enough pilots think about their future and the other employees even if they don't feel they owe any loyality to US (the flying public who has been keeping them in "high cotton" all these years) !
