Hi Keywest! Yes, I have gone to Tulum and did the tour back in May of 2002. It was just my DH and I...son did not come with us. If he had I think he would have been bored. (he's 11 and just wants a BEACH) We, however, had a great time. We were with Carnival and booked the 6 hr tour through them. From Cozumel we had to take the ferry over to the mainland which was quite bumpy but my stomach handled it fine. Then a 5 min walk to a touring bus. We were pleasantly surprised at the bus which was an A/C bus...not a run down local bus. Our Tour guide Jim did a great job of entertaining us for the 45 min - 1 hr bus ride which was actually interesting as we got to see some local sites. Once at the ruins, our tour guide gave us a 45 min tour of the ruins which I found beautiful. It was the oldest "civilization" I had ever been to and I throughly enjoyed the history of it all. Then we had approx 1 hr to tour on our own. We ventured away form the rest of the tourists and had a beautiful view of the water from a secluded area to the right of the ruins. some folks headed down to the beach area to cool off in the water, but we decided to stay dry. Then it was back to the bus for all the beer or sodas we could drink and a quick nap which we needed because it was HOT. Then the return to the ship.
All in all we had a great time. Honestly the walking is not that much, just 5 min to and from the buses and around the ruins which once on your own you can take it easy. I think you would enjoy it...definetly a different kind of tour. we then had a few hours to shop and tour, and eat a wonderful dinner at PANCHOS BACKYARD which I highly recommend. we even had time for Carlos and Charlies...but that's another story!
Have fun what ever you do!
