Anyone in the know on video cameras

DH would like a new video camera for Christmas. I had been doing some research and shopping around, and came to the conclusion that we wanted to go with a hard drive instead of messing with tapes, etc. I went to a local store that has a great reputation (we've bought several things there over the years) and he tells me that they do not sell the ones with the hard disk because they are hard to use.

He told me that you can't go back and just start taping again from any spot on the disk, and that it is impossible to fix "mistakes" like if you leave the camera on.

Do any of you have a camera with a hard disk? What is your feeling on it. Do you ever wish you had one with the mini tapes instead? I guess my feeling is that I don't see the point in trading my 8 mm tapes for mini tapes, even if the camera itself is much smaller.

Any insight??????

These new High def hard drive cams look very nice. i cant wait to get a new one myself. check out reviews on amazon.com maybe. right now i use a camcorder with mini dv tape. i am secure with that because i dont really have to make a back up copy like i would if it was a hard drive. but i want a hard drive camera next. I guess when u fill up the hard drive your gonna need a lap top to copy the movies too if u are on a cruise and plan to shoot more video

Data on a hard drive is dynamic data, can always be edited or deleted. If it can not be edited directly on the recording device it can be edited with the software that came with the camera. Recording to a disk is another thing, if it is not re-recordable you get what you get but then it can always be downloaded to the camera software and be edited but in that case the original becomes obsolete and you just wasted a disk. Sony makes some nice digital w/hard drive cameras.

We bought the a Sony camcorder with a hard drive before our October cruise. DH says it is very easy to use. It has an easy button if you don't want to mess with high tech stuff. I used it too and it is great. DH purchased a program for editing video - past, present and future, and he plans to edit vide/pictures and put them on DVD's for saving.

We're heading out to a Christmas party, but if you have any more ?'s ask away and I'll check with him later.
