Breaking - Closely related to the act of brakeing. The reversing of the ship's screws, while still in forward motion. Usually results in a "shuddering", or vibration of the ship. In older vessels, can actually result in breaking (apart) ... Similar to placing your vehicle's transmission in 'reverse' while doing 85 on the interstate ... not always a good thing.
