Balcony versus deck and on back of ship?

Hey - we are scheduled for 6/3/05 Alaskan cruisetour on Statendam. We have a verandah balcony toward the back of the ship. Is it a good thing to basically stay on your own balcony or go on deck to be sure we are not missing anything? I want to use the balcony as much as possible. And what is this about being at the back of the ship? Not that I can change it at this point - but is this a bad thing?? When do I know when to go up on deck versus stay on my own private island?? Also what about roughness of seas? I know during the inside passage - it is non-existant - but what about when we get into the Gulf of Alaska? Any suggestions?? Our first cruise to Alaska and a balcony!! Always had interior cabin - couldn't stand that. Thanks for any input

You will certainly want to use your balcony and the public decks. For example, when you are visiting Glacier bay or Hubbard the ship will sit for awhile with port facing the glacier and then do a 180 dergree turn and sit with starboard facing the glacier. So when you side is not facing you'll want to go out to the other side. Also the views on your cruise from forward is so encompassing of the scenery (aft as well) that you'll want to visit those parts of the ship. You'll get plenty of time and relaxation on your balcony as well. We love the balcony views.

Rough seas are not non-existant in the inside passage. Yes, there is a better chance of calmer seas but you are on an ocean and there can and will be waves. More chances of rougher seas in the gulf as you mention. Be prepared for rough seas everywhere. You won't want to be surprised.

IMHO the "only" way to travel on an Alaskan cruise is a balcony.

Thanks so much for your nice reply. As some have stated earlier some of us hate to ask "stupid" questions - afraid of being blasted!! I am a "newbie" and learning about Alaska and such as I go. First time for a balcony - and can't wait!

There's no such thing as a stupid question. Why not pick the brains of others who have already visited? We all have varied opinions of course so you have to know what's important for you. We're not all that outgoing and sociable and prefer the quiet and privacy of our own balcony. But others think balconies are a waste of money because they only sleep in the cabin and are always out and about all over the ship. Neither are wrong or right, just different.

Take nice strolls around the Promenade deck too. It's wonderful. And pull up a lounge and drink some hot cider for a few minutes. Just wonderful.

We've gone on 3 Alaskan cruises and I've never been so relaxed in my life just sitting on the balcony and soaking up the incredible scenery and wildlife.

I'm sure you'll enjoy your cruise.
