Would like to go to Barcelona for a few days ahead of time before we board our ship. NEver cruised, never been to Barcelona. Can you tell me:

1. How far the hubb-bubb is from where the ship is docked. We like to walk around and sightsee, any particular districts?
2. Any hotel recommendations?

TIA

Hi Pal,

The best place to walk around and get a feel for the city is the Ramblas. Interesting shops, flower stands, restaurants and lots of atmosphere. Coming in a couple of days early you will probably want to take a taxi to your hotel. Taxi fare will probably be about 12 to 15 euros from the airport. You may want to get some euros before you leave home or use an ATM at the airport. You can find the location of the ATM on the BCN location on the internet. The cruise port is just a short way from the Ramblas, but you have to take a round about trip to get there. I thought that the unfinished cathedral, Sangria (SP) Familia, is a very interesting sight to visit. You should enjoy your stay in Barcelona.

We have booked the Royal Hotel 2 nights pre cruise in July for $147.27 thru Orbitz.
Supposed to be a great location. Have also booked Apsis Atrium Palace Hotel
2 nights post cruise for 140 Euros per night.

Stayed one night at the Atrium Palace yesterday 05-11-04 and it was fabulous, 2 blks off las Ramblas and 2 blks from plaza canteluna square, right in the middle of all the action. The room was ultra modern in a classic Barcelona building, hot tub, sauna, pool, complimentary soda and juice in room bar. Just a couple of blocks from a Gaudi house that is open for tours and about 2 miles from Sagria Familia Church. There is a McDonalds within walking distance and a great brassierie just across the street from McD's. The red or blue sightseeing busses are nice if the day is sunny.

I don't know that hotel...
We stayed, this last time , at the Gran Havana and found it extremely nice...

Basically, though, the best place to be in Barcelona is NEAR the Placa Catalunya, preferably in the Eixample...

The Placa Catalunya is, basically, the center of everything--Las Ramblas starts here and goes South...The Gaudi sites, Casa Mila and Casa Battlo are a short walk to the north...Buses and Subways use this as a hub and go everywhere...

And the Placa is the center of nightlife, housing meny restaurants (yes, including McDonalds and Hard Rock Cafe) and also the giant El Corte Ingles department store (buy your bottles water and munchies in the basement supermarket)...

You can easily get a taxi from any hotel near hear to the ship...
