Belize - Cave Tubing Question

Hi all. We went to Belize last year on the Paradise & did snorkeling, so this year we were thinking of doing something different.

We will be in Belize in mid-July on Royal Carribbean's Explorer of the Seas. I usually prefer to stay with the ship's excursion. They have a cave tubing & jungle walk excursion for 96.00 per person. I had a few questions about this excursion.

On the ship's excursion, is it really an air-conditioned coach? Also how long is the ride? (They have an hour, which seems long) Is it a bumply road and like driving up a mountain?

Also, how long do you walk for? Are bug bites a problem?

What is the water like in the cave? Muddy?

Sorry to have so many questions, when my husband read the description, he sounded iffy about this excursion, some more info would help me a lot!

Thanks so much,
Marina

Okay, lets take a shot at this.............

"On the ship's excursion, is it really an air-conditioned coach?" I'd be surprised to find a non-air conditioned tour bus in Belize unless the a/c broke down.

"How long is the ride? (They have an hour, which seems long)"
An hour is pretty accurate.

"Is it a bumply road and like driving up a mountain?"
No, not at all like driving up a mountain. Belize has some eroding limestone hills away from the coastal plain. That's where the cave is. The first 1/3 of the trip is navigating thru the city traffic in Belize City. The next 1/3 is on the main blacktop road that heads sw from Belize City. The final 1/3 of the trip is on gravel road. This part somewhat bumpy but they were making some sort of effort to either level or widen the gravel road.

"Also, how long do you walk for?"
If my memory is correct, it was about a 25 minute walk from the bus to where the tubing starts. After the tubing it is at most a 5 minute walk back to the buses. You walk through the stream once while walking in towards the start of the cave tubing.

"Are bug bites a problem?"
They weren't for us. However I have read where others encountered some mosquitos. I suppose it just depends on the luck of the draw.........and recent insect hatches.

"What is the water like in the cave? Muddy?"
No, the water is not muddy at all - very clear.

My wife is not crazy about water. Is the water deep? Is the current strong or is just a mild ride?

The current is not strong at all - very leisurely, slow trip. There are a couple pools that they said were 10' deep but was too dark in the cave to tell. 99% of the stream is probably 3' deep or less. I think tours that are a ship excursion are required to wear inflatable life vests so there is no danger even for the nonswimmer.
