Other than cave tubing and snorkeling with nurse sharks (which I would love to do but can not as we will have 2 older ladies along in our group), any suggestions on what might be enjoyable for my family to do in Belize City?

You could take a water taxi to Caye Caulker. The island is very beautiful and relaxed. They have no cars but you could rent a golf cart for the older ladies. Next time we go there I think that is what we will do. We only had a short time on the caye when we did the Coral Breeze excursion and I wish we had had more time there. I hope this helps!

I would agree with the above post. We haven't been to Caye Caulker but have friends that stayed there for a week or two on vacation. Very laid back but nice place. We saw where the water taxi's depart from Belize City and it looked about 5-7 blocks away from the tender pier. When you get off at the pier you would turn left, following the street closest to the shore. Eventually that brings you to the building where the water taxi's are departing from.

Good maps of Belize City are:

I think that the Post Office (#9 on the "north" map) was close to the water taxis

We were in the same situation. We did the River Wallace/Altuan Ha ruins tour. The river tour was great and very relaxing. Saw lots of wildlife. The ruins were OK but had more walking than we thought. However, your ladies could sit on one of the benches and be able to see all of the ruins and not have to walk everywhere.

We went to Caye Caulker last year. It reminded me of my grandma's shore home but, I don't think there is anything there to do. Many people like to do a little shopping and there are no shops as far as I could tell. I would suggest you check out an excursion through the ship to see what is best. Is it an option to go your seperate way for the day although i mean on planned excursions not wandering around on your own?

I would advise against taking the bus city and Altun Ha tour with older folks. I had originally scheduled this tour with my Mom, but she was a bit tired so my sister came along instead. It was interesting but very hot and not many spots to rest. There is virtually no shopping in the town which is full of exceptionally narrow streets, but no really exceptional buildings or parks or anything like that. One of the exciting parts of the tour is seeing whether the bus (which is large and comfortable) will make it down the street without taking any more off the sides of the buildings! If you are into ruins, the heat and walking may be worth it, but be sure to take along water, a sun hat and sun screen. There is a very tiny area just at the port where the high speed tenders dock with a few shops and I believe a restaurant. My mom is keen to do most things, but I am glad she skipped this tour. Next time I'd opt for something on the water as the waters around Belize are incredibly beautiful and clear.

Excellent insight, thank you! I had really been considering that city and ruins tour, but was unsure of whether or not it was any good. Think I will take them to Chacchoben in Costa Maya instead. Now, I wonder if there are any boat tours that might just take us for a sight-seeing ride.... thought I read that somewhere......??

FYI - There were at least half a dozen little souvenier shops on Caye Caulker. Everyone that I was with was able to find what they were looking for as far as souveniers. I hope this helps!

If you decide to go to Caye Caulker the ride over was $15 round trip last year. It was a beautiful ride.
