I have never been to Belize & Costa Maya. Any suggestions on what to do in these ports?

My wife and I went to belize in november 02- we did a tour tubing through caves on an innertube- water was very clean- so were the caves- we had a great time. The tour also involved lunch at a small roadside restaurant- but we chose not to eat and wait to get back on the ship.

I did the Chacchoben Ruins tour at Costa Maya. It was very good. On my 2nd trip there, I just stayed around the port and relaxed.

I also did the Chacchoben Ruins in Costa Maya when I was there last. Loved it! Many have also gone over to the nearby fishing village for the afternoon. I havent been to Belize yet, later this year will be my first time. We will probably take a local tour out to Caye Caulker (as suggested by others here) for the day. I have read the city is nothing special to see, so dont bother with a city tour. Do a search on this board for each of these ports, there is more information here to read. However, I had little luck here with my Belize questions, but found lots of helpful info at CruiseCritic's website.

We just got back from Belize. We did the Altun Ha Mayan ruins tour. It was great and the guide was very knowlegable. You can climb to the top of the pyramids if you want. I have some pictures posted you can check out: http://www.cruise-forums.com/gallery/view.php?id=1979

We've been to Costa Maya twice. First time we did the Chacchoben ½ day tour which is well worth seeing. Second time we visited the port, did some shopping, had a "cool one" and layed around the ship.
The port of Costa Maya is a man made port with only a small fishing village near by. The port area itself is very well done with natives in Mayan Costume to great you as you enter the port. The shops have every variety of clothing, jewelry, souvenirs, etc. that you could want.
There is a small beach area for laying around/swimming and also a pool on the property.
There is a scarseness of tours at Costa Maya, but Princess is trying to remedy that. The bus ride to Chacchoben is one hour each way with an hour at the site.
They did have a whole day tour to Kohunlich, but it was cancelled. The bus took too long to get their and was usually late getting back to the ship.
