I am going on a cruise with my 10 yr old son, my sister and her family. They will be doing the river raft trip. I want to do the Lamanai and New River excursion. I refuse to go that far without seeing some of the ruins and with the boat ride, I thought this one might be the most fun for him. This one day is MY trip, but I do want him to enjoy it as well. He is an intelligent boy, so I am hoping he won't be bored. Any opinions? I really want to see more of the country than I could from the inside of a cave, though I do love caves and it does sound fun. Also, with the ship sponsored trip, I don't imagine it would be ill-advised for a single woman and child to go alone. Any words of wisdom would be much appreciated. :)

I think the River Boat trip including a tour of the Mayan ruins is perfect for you and your son. It gives both a very good overview of the wild life, flora & fauna plus the historic ruins. Which although not as elaborate as Tulum or Chicen Itza, will give both of you a good sample of pre-mayan culture. If this tour is offered by your cruise line, go ahead an book it to insure your safe and timely trip. A ten year old is too young for cave tubing IMHO anyway.
Bon voyage
