Best Location for Halibut Fishing

I was all set to book a fishing trip for the guys on our trip in Ketchikan and then read somewhere that Ketchikan is good for Salmon but there are other places better for Halibut. We will also be in Skagway and Juneau, would either of those places be better than Ketchikan? We will be cruising the first week in August.

I hope someone knows a good place to Halibut fish. My husband is looking forward to Halibut fish at one of the ports. Now we just have to figure out which one is best.

I went Halibut fishing in Ketchikan with Tovya Fishing Charters. I caught 2 halibut. Ray Kolean is the owner of a 30 + foot fishing boat. He researched the spot to find halibut by going there the day before our trip and knew that there were halibut in that location.

He is listed on the Ketchikan Visitor's Bureau web-site.
His e-mail is: rkolean@kpunet.net
Phone is : (907) 225-2031

How long was your fishing trip? How much was it? How big were the halibut and waht time of year? Did you bring them back home with you?

The trip was 4 hours. The trip was a gift so can't tell you how much it was - and it was a couple of years ago so prices will have changed.

The 2 halibut were about 30 lbs each. We were fishing at 300 ft. depth. The larger halibut are at 500 ft.

The major cruise lines don't let you bring your fish on board, but the smaller cruise lines will accommodate you. Or you can trade your fish in for some canned fish at the one of the local fish outlets. Try Silver Lining or The Cedars smokehouse approximately a mile from the dock.
