hi doreen

in jueau the dog that is a standing guard at the dock is patsy ann. they say she was a orphaned dog who was deaf. but she had the uncanny ability to know before the ships came in that they were coming and she would be there to greet them.

also there is a tour group called dolly varden. i dont think there is a dolly involed in that. it is just a name i beleive.

then in ketchikan there is ''dollys house'' on creek street. it was brothel in the gold rush days. you can take a tour through it and see what a real whore house would have looked like.

i hope this helps.

Thanks. I had heard the story about the bull terier (my favorite breed). Didn't know she was orphaned and deaf. Oh, I am so touched.

Thank you and I look forward to viewing the statue.

The best - most inclusive Saxman Native Village tour is offered through the Cruise ship. It is a 2 1/2 hour tour that takes you through old historic Ketchikan, past the fish ladder where salmon can be viewed from the end of July through September. It passes Dolly's House on Creek Street.

At Saxman Native Village, you will be treated to a 13 minute video explaining Native Culture and history. Following the video - you will take a short walk to the Clan House to view Native Dancing - and you'll be invited to join in on the last dance (this is the only place in Alaska where you can do this). Your driver/guide will tell you about the totem poles (authentic-some more than 100 years old that have been collected from old villages) and you will also enter the carving shed to meet and watch the carvers and learn about the history of native carving.

They allow 10-15 minutes in the gift shop before you return to the dock. You can walk 2 blocks from the dock back to Creek Street and visit Dolly's house. It is a self-guided 'canned' tour through an old house (1920's) - the house hasn't changed but the furniture is not the original. Dolly's house costs $4.00 pp to enter.

One of the local companies (tours sold on the docki) offers a similar tour without the Dancers/Video and you probably will not be able to enter the Carving Shed. They own Dolly's House so can give you a 'free' ticket to enter.
