Booze - HAL

Haven't sailed HAL for over a year. Just checking to see if they still are allowing liquor to be brought aboard for in room consumption - and still selling it aboard for the same at duty free prices?

That is still the policy as reported by a number of recent cruisers aboard HAL. We shall be sailing in December aboard the Zaandam so I will verify this after returning.

Yes....for consumption in your cabin ...not in public areas.

But why lug it with you when you can buy it in the onboard shop for a very reasonable price and you are free to take it to your cabin.

sail7seas,

Do they charge extra for you to buy a bottle from the liquor store on board and take it to your room. Other cruiselines are charging something like $8 more to take it back to your cabin. They want you to buy it and they keep it until the last day. Doesn't make sense to me.

Yea..I would love to know the answer to that one! I was on RCI in Jan and they charged us 9 bucks a bottle to bring it to our room!

We never buy any liquor for our room....just our personal preference to enjoy cocktails in the lounges so I don't exactly know the answer. But...this last cruise on Maasdam in August/September, I was in the "liquor shop" on the first night of each of our back-to-backs (I was buying some chocolates). Many people were buying bottles and no one was complaining at all. So..that makes me assume that most people felt the prices were fair.

The mark up is either 10 or 20 percent, can`t remember which as we never bought it...whichever it is, its still a good deal....jean

If you decided to bring liquor on with you and brought back to your room for consumption, what kind of drinks did you make.

Surely Whiskey and other liquors you can drink on the rocks.

Does anyone have any suggestions for making some tropical drinks in their staterooms? I have been thinking about how you deal with mixers etc.

Carry one of those leak proof containers with you and fill it each morning with fruit juice in the Lido Restaurant, or slip your room steward $5 at the beginning of the cruise and ask him to keep some iced down orange juice or whatever you prefer in the cabin. I also usually bring some of the 6 oz cans of O.J. in my luggage.

Any other mixer suggestions then OJ?

Has anyone ever seen tonic in small plastic bottles?

I've seen one litre size tonic water....but don't recall ever seeing the small size.

The only tonic they had on our last two HAL cruises was in a can, can't remember the brand, but it was very good.

Well, we like to have a martinin in our room before dinner. We take the bladder from boxed wine, clean it thoroughly and ... fill it with gin. The bladder is soft and flexible, packing in our luggage w/o a problem. I make up a little martinin kit with small cocktail glasses, a vermouth sprtzer, toothpick and olives AND we're in business. Our gin bladder lasted for 22 days on our last cruise.

Cheers ......

We just returned from the Ryndam. They still sell liquor for onboard consumption at a mark-up of about 20% over the duty free price.

On this particular cruise, the tonic was Canada Dry.

We just got off the Maasdam and we brought wine. We had no problem. They are suppose to charge a $10 corakage charge, but our wine steward did not for our bottle. We bought a lot of wine from the ship and we tipped him well.

Bill, I love the idea of using a wine bladder, but how do you get into it? I thought they were pretty much un-openable.....jean

Well, you pry the plastic pouring thingy off - very carefully. Rinse it out thoroughly with soapy water and then clear water ... pour in the Gin, or whatever you want to bring and enjoy!

HAL charges 20% to take it back to your room for consumption (saw the sign in the shop last week on Maasdam).
