Does anyone know how many bottles of tequila I can bring back to the US from Mexico? I was hoping to buy at least 6 bottles while in Cabo to bring back to San Diego. The 6 bottles will cost about 120.00. It is pomigrante (sp?) tequila, so yummy, about 19.00 bottle in Mexico, 43.00 a bottle at Bev-Mo. Help I'm leaving in about a month.

The only time we bring liquor back with us is if we drive to the port. Trying to schlepp it through the airport just isn't worth it for us. We always have too much luggage! 
That being said, when we went out of Cape Liberty in 2008, we brought back a ton of Absolut....well, actually about 10 litres. We declared all of it on our form, but they never even asked about it and didn't charge us a penny.

Regardless of the $800.00 per person duty-free exemption if you've been out of the country for over 48 hours, you are only allowed to bring back one litre of alcoholic beverages per person. If you are going to attempt to bring in more, be sure to pack it securely and place it in your checked luggage, not your carry-ons. The bottles definitely will be confiscated by the TSA at the airport.

We had two of the 4-litre boxes....we bought the Absolut on board RCCL because it was a huge savings.
As I said, we claimed all of it and were ready to pay the duty, but they never asked for a penny!
We calculated what we would have paid back here and even if we had to pay the duty, it would have been far cheaper.

- Travel by Steamship or Airplane Adults traveling into California from a foreign country by steamship or airplane may bring with them a reasonable amount of alcoholic beverages for personal or household use. You can bring back as much alcohol as you can carry. You may, however, have to pay duty on it. You might think that your question is relatively straight forward but it actually isn't.

Probably the standard flat rate for Canada and Mexico, 3% get a receipt for it and declare anything over the first bottle, may or may not get stuck with paying the duty, but as long as you have declared it no big fines, also the duty free is per person so each one in your party over 21 can bring back one bottle.

So from what i am reading... we are at the mercy of the attending customs agent?? so if, he got off to a bad start in the morning he might charge the duty , and if he got lucky on his mid morning break he may not??? is that how i should interpret this??
If so i guess the best thing you could do is bring back what you want, but be prepared to pay the duty.... and be grateful and happy if you dont..:whistle::huh::scratch:

In my experience, pretty much. My suspicion is that if you are a bottle or two over the paperwork hassle isn't worth it to most agents. However, I seem to recall one friend who brought back nine liters of liquor and didn't pay any duty. Of course she was a 10 and that might have figured into it.
