Bus to train transport question

Hello,

I work in a hospital and a patient and I got talking about how they transport people from bus to train and what not for the land part to Anchorage. Not sure if he was getting more drugs then he should. :) He told me that after the cruise they load people up in buses, then the bus drives over to the train and there is a ramp and the bus just hops right on the train. The train takes you to Anchorage and then the bus backs off the train. I have to tell you that this sounds like a great way to do it, but I am laughing my tail off trying to imagine this.

He told me that this was the way they did it in the late eighties. Are they still doing it this way?

If the ship went into Whitter then what was described is probably correct. Until recently the only way in and out of Whitter was by train. They had large flat Railroad cars that vehicles, cars, busses, RV's drove onto and then were transported from Whitter to where the train joined the Seward Hwy. It was very nerve racking taking a 31 ft motor home with a 23 ft boat on the train. They had a ramp that you drove next the train and then angle drove on. Glad my husband whas driving. They have now put a road in with the railroad track so you can drive to Whitter when the tunnel is open to vehicles. Hope this answers your question.

I used to think that being able to drive my tour bus onto a railway flatcar was THE coolest part of driving around Alaska, and certainly the best thing about Whittier! It was a very funny feeling going through a tunnel "tail-gating" the vehicle ahead, but everyone enjoyed it (except for some of the people trying to get their motorhomes on board :) )
