Be sure to settle the fare before hopping in....Cozumel taxi rates are posted at the taxi pick up piont at the pier BUT these prices are for a "car" not a "van". We hopped in a van and when we got to the downtown area the driver tried to charge us $16 since we were in a van. Luckily my father in law speaks spanish and was able to communicate to the driver that he was ripping us off otherwise we might have been stuck. Also note that if you get a van they will try to smash as many people in as possible from several families then charge EACH family the per ride rate. You would think going by the sign that says Taxi to downtown $6 per ride not per guest that the riders could divvy up the ride cost but they will charge $6 per family/couple (or try to blackmail you for $16 per couple as our driver did)arrrrrrrrrrghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
