Cabin Upgrade Tips?

I have heard some rumors about folks that inquire (and sometimes get) about upgrades as soon as they board ship. My wife and I are sailing to Hawaii aboard the Summit on April 9th. We have a concierge class stateroom. Does anyone have any advice?
Thanks....

Not likely once you are on the ship. Most upgrades are given before you sail and mostly to long time, loyal, cruisers on a cruise line. I have gotten numerous upgrades on HAL and Princess. Once from an inside cabin to an aft balcony on Princess.

One thing, your TA must advise the cruise line in advance that you will accept an upgrade.

Thanks Frank, The only reason I asked is because I heard of someone who went directly to a managers desk once on board and asked if there was any suites available. According to what I heard, they paid only a couple hundred dollars extra and were given a suite.
We have cruised 4 times with Princess and this is our first Celebrity Cruise.
Thanks for your time and advice.

More than once I have seen signs as you check in or the front desk that says " No upgrades are available". But you could try. There is another post around on celebrity where a cruiser asked about an upgrade and was giver a VERY high price. Good luck.

Those signs.: "No upgrades" have always been on the desk on our cruises. They disappear after the first day rush is over. I've never heard of a "cheap" upgrade on the ship but they do allow you to pay more for available rooms.

Their policy seems to change with time and by ship. In 2001, I booked a balcony on Century and was upgraded to a Sky Suite without even asking. That was only my second cruise with Celebrity. In 2002, I booked a window on Infinity and asked once onboard for an upgrade and got a balcony (no charge). In 2003, I booked a balcony on Mercury and was able to get a sky suite onboard through the concierge upon embarkation for $300. Now I have 10 cruises with Celebrity and upgrades seem to never be automatic, though the only times I see a "no upgrades available" sign is when they're fully booked. In fact, we usually see a "Why not upgrade?" sign, and this transaction is handled at check-in.

I'm not sure that Celebrity has changed its policy. Perhaps, but only perhaps. Over the last few years, after more than doubling the fleet capacity by the introduction of the four M-class ships, they have been running a higher occupancy rate, setting new records every year. Naturally, with fewer empty cabins, on average, there are fewer upgrades -- paid or otherwise. Do they sometimes occur? Sure. But not as often as they used to.

I'm not sure how it happened as I'm new to Celebrity, but we booked an inside stateroom gty deck 9 or above. Right now, my online reservation says I have a deluxe outside cabin (deluxe means window vs. porthole, I think) on the Panorama deck (#8184). I'm guessing they didn' t have any inside staterooms on deck 9 or above? Or it's just a fluke, and we'll be escorted to our lovely inside room once we get to Galveston.

ta da...the upgrade fairy has got you hooked on Celebrity....
if you have a real concern here check with your TA or phone Celebrity direct. Sounds great to me unless the new room is overhanging the side of the ship with open holes in the floor.
or...... seriously has a fatal flaw like right under the 24 hour cafe or something.
