Has anyone ever had cabin upgrades (ie, inside to oceanview; or oceanview to balcony)? Are the chances of upgrades better if you pick a guaranteed cabin?

Yes, they're much better if you go with a Guarantee. We've never had a free upgrade with Princess. We always pay for what we want, but I've known others that have been upgraded for free. It's definitely something I wouldn't count on.

(You might want to see the topic below this one.)

Princess rarely upgrades from inside to outside or outside to balcony. It happens on a few ocassions but is not the norm. You are more likely to be moved to a better location withing the type of cabin that you booked (ie.a better located inside, a better located outside or balcony).

If you decide to book a catergory guarantee make sure that you study the deck plans carefully and are willing to accept any cabin that you might find yourself upgraded to. Remember you lose the ability to choose whether you are fore or aft, port or starboard, near an elevator lobby, have beds that convert et. if you go with the guarantee. Do not book a guarantee in the hopes of getting a cabin that you really want. If you really want outside, book outside. If a balcony is important to you book the balcony.

Yep, they do happen! We booked the CB - partially obstructed view with a confirmed cabin of E405 seven months out, but did opt for an upgrade. Lo & Behold, when we checked in they gave us Cabin B614 - Baja with a balcony!! Always believe in the upgrade fairy!!!

It does happen and it can be excellent (or were we just lucky)?
Last Decemeber, we booked 2 weeks on the Sea Princess (Barbados-Barbados via Ft Lauderdale) and we went for an outside with balcony guaranteed. We ended up in B750 which is one the suites!!!!!
But as others say, go for what you are happy with as a minimum, and don't complain if this is what you get.
It was our second time with Princess and we have our next cruise booked with them for Feb.2008.

Best to follow that old rule of thumb: never book any cabin that is less than you will be happy with. You will usually get exactly what you book.

That being said, that everytime we've ever booked an inside guarantee (6 times), we were upgraded at least one catagory, usually several catagories, and once we were upgraded from inside to oceanview, and that was on a the Golden princess.

Unfortunately after that, we succumbed to the temptation of the verandahs and have booked those ever since. Never saw any hint of an upgrade since then. But I'm not complaining. I now always book exactly the cabin I want. I know this way I am never disappointed.

Hi nottud:

We had the exact same experience booked our first Princess cruise to Alaska for an outside and got upgraded to a balcony. Now we can't go back! It is a trap! We have been very lucky with upgrades in our cruises with Princess. We usually take a guarantee and hope for the best. Sometimes it works and sometimes it does not. Out foxed my self once and booked an inside thinking we would get upgraded to at least an outside. First time our cabin never changed! Learned from that one and now it is back to balcony. Really did not mind the inside but I suffer from mild claustrophobia and it was a little tough at times. As other posters have said always book the level of cabin that you will be happy with. Even if you have an assigned cabin you can always put down on the reservation that you are willing to take an upgrade, provided you are willing to change cabins. I have tried for years to figure out how the upgrade system works and have come to the conclusion that it is all just plain dumb luck as to who gets an upgrade and who doesn't.

On Grand Princess back in March we booked an inside guarantee because it was the only thing available when we booked. We ended up in an obstructed ocean view. It was actually a great room. The window looked out over the top of a lifeboat but looking straight out was clear. The room was also wheelchair accessable and it was HUGE. We had some friends on board with a balcony cabin and ours was about twice the size of theirs. =eek

Having said all that, I would agree with the rest. Our upgrade was definately the exception rather than the rule.
