Are there any secrets to getting a cabin upgrade at port during the embarkation process?

As far as I know upgrades are planned before embarkation although many people don't find out about it until they arrive at the dock. It is all up to the upgrade fairy. Keep an eye on the price of your cruise. If it goes down you may not be able to get a refund or shipboard credit but you can request an upgrade. If you chose a cabin you will not be upgraded.

Darlene,
What do you mean if you chose a cabin you will not be upgraded ?
Do you mean if you initially chose the cabin or as part of a price adjustment ?
I ask because we specifically chose our cabin for location and do not want to be upgraded to another floor. Now if it were to a better cabin (different type/not floor) that would be different. We have been wondering about it.

I choose a cabin for location also. When you choose a cabin the cruise line assumes you want that one. They don't upgrade you because for all they know you are traveling with the people in the next cabin. If the price goes down and you request an upgrade you can specify that you only want an upgrade if it is _____ _____(whatever you are looking for). That is what I did. They were going to upgrade me to a cabin under the pool. I turned it down for fear of noise. Found out from people on the cruise that some did find it noisy. Early risers and heavy drinkers didn't seem to have a problem!
