Cabin Upgrades

I'm sailing on the Galaxy this Friday and was wondering if someone could give me some tips on requesting a cabin upgrade.

How does one go about this? Do you ask at check in, before you board the ship? Or do you go straight to Guest Relations and talk to them? What do you say? Does your Captain's Club membership help at all?

I know it's a long shot, but the worst that can happen is they say no, right?

In any case, we will have a fantastic time no matter where we end up sleeping.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

HI LISA,
JOIN THE CAPTAINS' CLUB!!! ONLY $35 FOR 2; ONE TIME FEE AND WORTH EVERY PENNY. GET A REALLY GOOD T.A. BOOKING ONLINE CAN'T DO THAT FOR YOU.

Here's the link to the cruisediva article.

Ross - Thanks for the pointers. We are captain's club members (founder classic - only 2 more cruises until we are select!). We booked a guarantee cabin so we did not get the one category captain's club upgrade. But to be fair to Celebrity, we are in a category 7 room and we paid less than the going rate for an inside cabin.

It looks like there are still a few deluxe oceanviews and balcony cabins still left for our sailing though.

You can ask and if they say yes, be ready to pay for it. It won't be a free upgrade.

LISA,
THERE ISN'T MUCH DIFFERENCE FROM A CAT 7 TO A CAT 4, EXCEPT THE LOCATION; THE SIZE IS THE SAME AND THE VIEW WILL BE ABOUT THE SAME. A BALCONY WOULD BE A DEFINITE UPGRADE!

I"m not clear on whether you are seeking a free upgrade, or a paid upgrade. If you're seeking a free upgrade, it's not impossible, but neither is it realistic. There is a chance you could do a paid upgrade to a balcony or suite. Is that what you are asking about?

I sure do wish I knew how to get a free upgrade. I must be doing something wrong. I'll be on my 10th Celebrity cruise this August and the only time we got an upgrade was after 9/11 when the ship was nearly empty. I must be doing something wrong.

Last year on Millie, we were in Celebrity Suite, ask what would be the cost to upgrade to Penthouse, the guest relation desk quote $3000 for that 7 days cruise which we declined!

In 2001, we were upgraded from cat 2 to SS on Century without even asking. In 2002, we bought an ocean view on Infinity and thought we'd get upgraded - no dice, but when we asked at guest relations, we were upgraded to a balcony cabin. In 2003, it appears now that all upgrades are being sold onboard by Celebrity. We purchased a balcony guarantee on Mercury and paid $300 to upgrade to a SS.

Ross - Didn't make it to the boat early enough to ask for one. I got tied up at work in NYC, left a little later than planned and got on the ship at 5:15PM for a 6PM departure!

The trip was terrific. Our room was a category 7 and was meant for 3 people....so we had more drawer space than we knew what to do with.

I've got my eye on a Constellation sailing in December. The rates are so good I think I may go Concierge Class!
