Crew Spotlight: Enhancing Embarkation: NEW Stateroom
Direct Service

When Holland America Line Hotel Manager Rene Tuinman, presented his staff aboard the ms Volendam with a challenge – How can we improve our guests' first cruise day? – they took him very seriously.
What they eventually uncovered has come to be known as Holland America Line's new Stateroom Direct Service. With new operational efficiencies, all Holland America Line ships will have guests' staterooms ready for them as early as 11:30am, allowing embarking guests to settle comfortably and quickly in their staterooms as soon as they board. As Tuinman explains, this was no small effort for the crew.
"We realized that we needed to adjust schedules, without asking staff to work longer hours," says Tuinman. "It became obvious that preparation and manpower were the keys."
"Staterooms could be stripped and cleaned very quickly if we had all supplies on hand and ready," says Tuinman. "Every staff member needed to be aware of our goal, and waste no time looking for or gathering supplies. Simply by doing that, we greatly streamlined our housekeeping functions."
"There was a period of trial and error, during which we made improvements, but it was a team effort all the way – and a great improvement in service and guest satisfaction."
"Now our guests really can begin their cruise as soon as they board," says Tuinman. "They settle comfortably into their staterooms leaving their carry-on luggage behind, move around an uncrowded ship and enjoy lunch in a relaxed atmosphere.
"Guests have been appreciative," adds Tuinman. "It's very gratifying to have found a way to enhance our guests first cruise day experience. It's unique to Holland America Line, and we're very proud and happy to offer it."
This new service will be available on all ships by the end of February.

That is good news.

many years ago this time frame would have been the norm. Somehow we (they) got away from it. And I mean all cruise lines.. with the time getting longer.

And as we all pay full fair for what has become a half day.. I applaud them. I know that even when given a place to leave my luggage or wait for my cabin.. is is not relaxing for me.
I like to get to the cabin, stow my stuff and THEN I can relax.

As much as I like this new idea -- I can't help but wonder if we are no longer going to be able to stay in our cabins after 8 AM since the cabin stewards will need all the time they can get to get the cabins ready by 11:30.

Can't help but wonder if we will have to try and find a place to sit in a lounge somewhere until it is our time to disembark.

This is great news, never having sailed Hal, yet, I thought this is how it was when boarding their ships. I can say it was one of the nice perks we loved when we boarded the Grand Princess last month.

Thats good news.

Finally....I have never understood why HAL couldn't do this. We have always been able to get into our cabins immediately on boarding Princess....and we have never been rushed out of them either!

When we sailed Princes years ago we always had to be out of our cabins by -- which was a hassle lugging carryons to the dining room for breakfast.

I see that happening in the future on HAL.

KK..couldn't have been any more of a nuisance that carrying around your carry ons when you board a HAL ship!

The last few times I have cruised with Princess they have provided lounges with coffee, newspapers etc. to wait until it is your time to disembark. We would get up, get dressed, go to breakfast in the dining room and return to the cabin to "freshen up" then go to a lounge to wait to be called to disembark. It has never been any more of a hassle than cruising with any other line including but not limited to HAL...the problem is that I always hate leaving!

On HAL we have always been able to drop off our carryons in the Neptune Lounge on Embarkation Day. For those who don't have a Deluxe Suite there is a place in the Lido where you can check-in your carryons while you eat.

I seriously doubt of HAL will provide coffee or anything else in the lounges while you wait to disembark the ship. And HAL doesn't have a lot of large lounges for people to go to.

It will be interesting to see what happens when we get off the ship in March.
