Camera film & luggage scanners

According to news sources, the new airport scanning equipment does indeed damage both unexposed and undeveloped camera film. During my Carnival cruise last month from Miami, I noticed that Carnival also uses similar luggage scanning equipment at the cruise ship terminal.

Does Carnival's scanning equipment also damage camera film? Does Carnival use the same scanning equipment in all of its ports and onboard the ships? I've written to Carnival, but haven't yet received a reply. I was wondering if anyone on this board knew the answer. I want to keep my camera film safe. Thanks.

Hi George,

This is not about the film but I was curious about the Imagination and the Victory. I see you have been on both ships and would like to know what you thought about them.

The only thing I can tell you is when we went on the Pride my friend put her camera bag through the scanner and our pictures came out fine. Sorry I don't know more.

Dgregg:
It's too long to post here. You can read reviews of the Carnival Victory by me and by some of my travel companions at:
http://www.ircruise.com/reviews_2002.html

I did not write a review of the Imagination. It is the same sized ship at the Ecstasy and Fascination. The food, onboard entertainment, and cabin service/steward were all good. We really enjoyed ourselves and felt then that a 5 day cruise was too short. Since then, we've only done 7 day cruises.

We took a 5 day cruise on the Imagination from Miami in 1999 to the Grand Cayman Island and Ocho Rios, Jamaica. Our TA arranged a free tour in Grand Cayman. While we liked climbing Dunns Falls in Ocho Rios, the vendors everywhere else were too pushy for our tastes. Grand Cayman was beautiful. When we return there in December 2003 on the Conquest, we plan to do either the stingray tour or just hit the beaches. I don't remember the Cruise Director's name back then, but the person was entertaining.

If you are concerned about film, there is several things you can do.

Hand the film to the airlines and cruise luggage inspectors and have them search "by hand/by eye" instead of having the film go thru scanners.

Have your film developed during your vacation or on the cruise, that way you don't have to worry about the return trip scanners.

The other and best recourse is to purchase a Lead Film Bag about $10. This can be hand searched and if forgotten in a tote, can go through airport xrays with no problem.

Thanks for the info George! I am considering booking the sister ship to the Conquest, the Glory that premiers in July 03.
