Can I rant and vent for a moment?

On another board there are not one but 2 threads going about the mandatory $10 per day service charge that NCL adds to your onboard account. One person threatened not to set up an onboard account so he couldn't be charged the charge (how he plans on boarding the ship is beyond me). He claims to have done 30 cruises so he should KNOW that isn't going to happen.

It blows my mind how many people whine and complain about the service charge. What a bunch of cheapskates!! I finally told them if they don't want to pay it, stay home.

As for me, for 7 days someone makes my bed, cleans my bathroom, tidies my cabin, serves my meals and cleans up afterward. For 7 days I can focus on ME. I'll gladly pay the $70 for the services for one week.

OK, I'm done. I just had to vent. It all just made me sooooooo mad!!!

It comes to $10 a day..... If you were in a five star hotel you'll have to tip $1.50 for breakfast, $1.50 for lunch, and probably at least $3.00 for the steak dinner. Your waiters alone will get $6.00 in tips..... You are also supposed to tip the bellhops, the cleaning ladies, and the bartenders which would easily run up to another $4.00..... $10 a day is cheap!

The truth of the matter is that people are cheapskates! They don't want to tip anyone, nor do they want to pay a cover charge either. With all the entertainment onboard a ship in all the lounges without a cover charge, why are they complaining about the tip charge? Whatever happened to dropping a dollar into a muscians hat?

I don`t have a problem with the compulsory tipping. With freestyle dining there are sure to be people who try to get out of tipping and the waiters depend on these tips.
I cannot find the post mentioned above "30 cruises and he`s not going to set up" ...etc Which board is it on?

It's on the critic board. I saw that post too and thought - good grief. To have a bad attitude before cruising like that - may as well stay home!

The large number of cruises a person has been on means diddly squat. Actually if anything it really is a hinderance because they are more inclined to complain about system changes. The cruiselines don't care if someone with a long history gets ticked off and decides not to cruise with them again because of change in policy. They are much happier selling cabins to newbies who don't know any different and adapt. Cruises are sailing in most cases with a full ship so to them.. there's no loss of profit if someone with a long history decides to cruise elsewhere.

I've cruised for many years on different lines and lots of cruises under my belt. One thing I'm trying to do is be more tollerant to change. I understand people getting irritated when policies change - however unless they learn to adapt - their voices will just fall on deaf ears. Trying to bully the cruiseline like that poster was trying to convey is a waste of time. Think about all the poor vicitms who have to share a table with someone like this.. gesh.

I too do not mind the $10.00 tip, sounds cheap to me.. only thing I dont like is the trouble it seems to give some "extra".. I've heard on HAL if you give extra the crew might think you pulled out your $10.00 a day tip.. I love to give for great service but to have to explain it all to someone who might not even understand what your saying is frustrating..

Is this the automatic tipping, or a separate resort fee?

I just returned from a business conference that was held in a resort hotel. Each room was assessed a mandatory $10-per-day "Resort Services Fee" that included (and I'm copying this from the card we were given):

No charge for local phone calls
No access charge for credit card and 800 number calls
Starbucks regular and decaffeinated coffee provided daily in the guest room
Monday-Friday USA Today newspaper delivery
Use of the health club facilities
Use of the tennis courts
Shuttle service within Resort (it was a big place)

As we were there for a conference and had little free time, and as I do not drink coffee, my $10 per day pretty much covered the USA Today delivery. Nice paper, but not worth $10. :lol Still, it was such a small charge that I didn't mind. (And I'm sure my company won't mind paying it, either.)
