I saw some kids on these scooter things last time I was in florida.... they're so cool!!!

If I can do this in either Key West or Nassau, I'm all over it.

as always the warning, driving is on the left, there are few traffic lights, multiple circles.. streets not marked the best, heavy traffic, VERY crazy cab and bus (jittney) drivers.

So much is in walking distance and the other can be reached with the $1 bus ride. I'd suggest key west, but everything is there on duval street which isn't even 2 miles long.

nassau was VERY congested and I was walking faster than the scooters... plus there are a multitude of moped driving tourists who are causing many close calls, you have to watch carefully when simply walking and crossing streets.

If you've driven in other ports under similar circumstances, like st. thomas.. I'd say go for it.. this is no aruba though!

Another thought on the subject of mopeds in the islands...You can rent them....we did rent them in Nassau...rode it less then 15 minutes and spent the rest of the morning in the hospital!! I did not realize at the time that the ships daily news bulletin STRONGLY SUGGEST you DO NOT RENT them as they are not regulated in the islands. Thus, there is a high incidence of brakes and throttles malfunctioning. IF only I'd read the ships daily report that first day of our cruise :( Live and learn.

I spent the remainder of our cruise on crutches, and carrying around an ice bag to keep on my ankle. I had 7 stitches from a wound that hit a main artery in my ankle. We did get WONDERFUL care at the PUBLIC hospital in Nassau, and they got me back to the ship before it left port (we were only there half a day). After returning home my injury did get infected (I do NOT in anyway fault the hospital for the infection!!) just something that happens when you put a moped kick stand into your ankle!!!

Anyway, this isn't intended to frighten anyone. I just want you to make a more knowledgable decision then I did before you rent a moped in the islands. This occurred on the MOS@IC group cruise, so many of the folks on this board can attest to my experience.

I just returned from the Elation this morning (our 19th cruise) and yes you can rent mopeds in Nassau. As reported by others, the cruise lines all strongly discourage them. The cruiselines claim they are concerned for your safety, and that may be true, but the cruiselines don't make a penny off mopeds...

Anyway, I also think that you should NOT rent mopeds in Nassau. That port is probably one of the worst ports to rent a moped. Why? Downtown nassau is very congested and very compact. You can walk to nearly every historical site in less than an hour or two at the most.

If you really want to rent a mopen, pick a different port to do so.
