I have heard that the cruise line's take a 15-30% bite out of the auto gratuity's for administering the policy. If this is true I DEFINATELY DO NOT WANT TO GO WITH THIS POLICY.Is it possible to tip in the tradtional fashion on Carnival? The cruise prices have gone up enough already with out the cruise line screwing the hired help on top of it.I would rather hand the service people thier tip's in person.JMHO. The money that is for tips go to the people that it is supposed to go to through the automatic tipping.
Cash tips go into a pool that will be shared among those workers.
At least with your auto tipping some of that money go to the workers who work the buffet. (also remember that your asst waiter also works the buffet durin ghis off time.

I realize that the asst. waiter works the buffet line. I would tip him in the diinig room along with the waiter and m'atrede. I am not trying to short anyone, but make sure that they get what is coming to them.I think that the cruise lines should get together and make the cruise all inclusive and pay thier people a decent wage. That would end the debate. JMHO. Viet

serene56,

You state that cash tips go into a pool to distributed all. I have always presumed that if I gave an envelope with cash in it to my waiter, that he got to keep all of it. I could see now that they do the auto tipping that they share the tips in some way. But I still thought that they got to keep all of the cash.

In most cases if you tip the person directly with an envelope the money will go in his or her pocket. This is why I prefer doing it this way. The last cruise we were on the cabin steward had a helper, so I assume the steward shared the tip's.But that was up to them.I have been on several cruises where the waiter got his tip but the assistant waiter got extra because I felt that he did a better job.I'm sure he didn't split it with others.I still prefer the old way of doing it. The cabin steward pays his helper a set fee each week. He does not split his tips with his helper. Thats how it was explained to me on the Miracle. Steward has 26 cabins.. 4 helpers. But the helpers do not get tipped-- its up to the cabin steward to make sure they are paid. These workers are kitchen help--behind the scene laundry people...

Only curious but how did the asst do a better job? I know that when waiting on the tables it is his job to get your ready drinks (iced tea/coffee, milk) and salad dressing or cheese--etc. etc so it seems that he does more.

Also asst waiters have less tables to wait on then a reg waiter does--depending on his experience. Themopre experinece the more the asst gets to do-- thats how they also move up to become a reg waiter.

I do not know what was meaqnt by:

"Cash tips go into a pool that will be shared among those workers".

If you remove the auto tip from the waiter, assistant waiter and cabin steward and tip them in cash, the cash go into their pockets and no where else. Do not remove the $1.00 that goes to the "alternate dining" people, increase that because that does get split among the Lido workers.

If my dining and cabin service is really good, I tip extra.

Cashtips are pooled. Crew are not allowed to have cash. Its a safety issue onboard.
