Can you hire taxi for tour

Can you hire a taxi once in port at Ketchikan, Juneau, and Skagway for a few hours to take you to the places you want to see? I know we've done this on many of the Caribbean Islands and it worked out better than taking the ships tour. Since we're four people it usually always comes out cheaper and we don't have to wait around for others.

I can answer for Juneau and Skagway - Yes to both.
In Juneau, taxis advertise that they offer tours - the price is reasonable and the driver will advise on which sights are the most popular. You can also stop at some out-of-the-way shopping locations such as Costco or Fred Meyer to stock up on those items you may have forgotton.
Skagway is pretty small but there are taxis there... you can walk to most of the attractions or rent a bicycle to visit some of the more remote points of interest such as Jewell Gardens, the gold rush cemetary and the gold dredge. You can rent a car to drive up White Pass or over to Dyea. Skagway has horse-drawn carrage tours and pedicabs - but most of the visitors I see in the pedicabs could really use the exercise and would be better off if the pedicab driver became the passenger for a while.

Appreciate you replying. I marked your suggestions down on our list. We are leaning towards hiring a taxi to take us around as we've been to Alaska before and have seen some of the more popular attractions and we don't really want to spend the money for the flight planes (even though I'm sure it's beautiful and we'd love to go) as we are a family of four and it can get very expensive.

I do have one question, when you mentioned gold dredge did you mean panning for gold and can we do this on our own and not with a tour? If so, where's the best place to go? We figure we'll hire the taxi for several hours and this way we'll always have our transportation.

Does anyone know about Ketchikan? Can we hire a taxi there too?

I think that you can pan for gold... I've never been to the dredge so I can't offer first-hand experience..
the dredge is just a little way out of town... I fly over it several times a day..
I understand that no tour is necessary..

Skagway now has taxis which can be hired for tours.. they just started this service this year.... ask for Cindy... she really knows Skagway... she has lived here for years... some drivers are not residents..
Also, you can pan for gold at the dredge.. ask for Monica...

Chuck, thanks for the information. If we ask for Cindy will they know who we're talking about (is there only one Cindy)? Where can we find her? Can we book her ahead of time...does she have an email where we can contact her? Also, where is the dredge and what else is there to do there besides panning for gold and how much is it?

Any info or suggestions for our trip to Skagway would be appreciated. Thanks.
