We are looking to go to the Caribbean in June of 2009, I have been to some of the Eastern Caribbean ports. Are the Western ports just as good or better?

I leave for Grand Cayman, Cozumel, Belize and Honduras on the Legend in 2 days; I will be certain to come back when I return to give a brief summary of these ports.

It depends. The water and beaches are largely the same, of course. But, the Western Caribbean
has far fewer islands and they are farther apart. So you will typically visit fewer islands in the same
duration cruise. Furthermore, Western itineraries can include mainland Mexico stops as well.
In some of those you can get reasonable access to the Mayan ruins and all of the history and
culture associated with them. Finally, if diving or reef snorkeling is important to you, some of the
Western islands have the best diving in the Western hemisphere.

The bottom line, I think, is that the East and West are different, but a wonderful cruise can be had
in either.

We prefer the western cruises. Grand Cayman is a great place for both the beach and shopping - beautiful port area.
Cozumel has quite a bit to offer, including some very good prices if you like to shop.
I actually think most western cruises have 4 stops (2 noted above, Jamaica & usually a private island stop in the Bahamas) on most weekly cruises, so you'll get to see a different side of the Caribbean.

While they're all great, I prefer the Western Caribbean. Particularly Grand Cayman, Cozumel, Belize and Roatan Honduras which are my favorites. The snorkeling is great down there and the water is, in general, crystal clear. I think my preference also has to do with the fact we have had much better weather on our Western Caribbean cruises than on our Eastern Caribbean cruises but that's just the luck of the draw.
