Caribbean--too hot in August?

I am trying to find out if the Caribbean is significantly more hot and humid in August than other times of the year? We want to go on a cruise for our 30th anniversary in August and would prefer the Caribbean but others are telling us it isn't pleasant in August. Is that so?

Hello Katy,

We have cruised twice in August and is our favorite time of the year, along with Feb/Mar. Yes the weather will be very warm and extremely humid, much like that of south florida in the summer. It is also a little risky as one day you may have gorgeous weather and the next you may find yourself avoiding a very bad storm. There's a healthy chance you may encounter rain, for 10-20 minutes a day, but the weather is gorgeous most the other time. It will be hot though, very hot, the sun is intense around this time. If you have ever been to southern florida in july/august, then this is the best description I can provide in relation to the weather. Enjoy and I hope this helped your decision.

The hot weather does not bother me much since I am from Florida. However, I was on the Glory in November, and yes, people still complained that the weather was too hot. It was about mid to upper-80s during our whole trip and the humidity may have bothered some, but we were used to it. If you are prepared for it to be upper 80s and humid, you should be fine. Just dont' expect it to be much cooler than that. The closer you get to the equator, the warmer it will be!

BP, perhaps Alaska? That is the other option for our cruise. I have been leaning toward the Caribbean and was hoping to hear it wasn't significantly different in the summer as far as heat and humidity. I live in a place where summers are regularly in the 90's and 100's but we are very dry with low humidity.

You might notice the humidity, but the tradewinds provide a nice warm breeze almost constantly. Just do it!

Bon Voyage!

We were in Puerto Rico for 4 days in July and talk about heat & humidity! Your clothes stay damp all day and night, the mopped floors in your hotel room don't dry and it rains occassionally. Was it a big deal? No way! That's part of the experience. It wasn't anything we couldn't tolerate and the pools were always nearby.

The same is true for the ship. It was too hot to play basketball in the full sun, rollerblade for more than 1/2 hr., rock climb and even just sit in the direct sun, but isn't that what you want when you cruise? You learn to work around the heat - play basketball in the late afternoon or early morning. I would cruise in August in the Caribbean anytime.

Go and have a great time and work with the weather! :) :) :)

Hot and very humid. The water is just right for swimming. LOL Upper 80's to low 90's is the right water temp for me.

We went to St. Thomas the last week of July and it was breezy, showers were heavy but brief.

One thing I did notice was the abundance of jellyfish in the water, not just little ones but the great big ones. Other than that and me getting the worst cold I have ever had was a good time.

Well, I haven't heard anything that would deter me from going in August. Since only one of you mentioned jellyfish, I guess it isn't a problem everywhere in the summer. Thanks for the responses!
