My wife and I and another couple are sailing the Carnival Spirit Northbound Alaska on June 2, 2004. We definitely want to go fishing and see the once in a lifetime sights because this may be a once in a lifetime thing. Stops are Ketchikan, Juneau, Skagway, and Sitka. Any ideas? We really want to make it worth our time and money. Any suggestions from anyone would be great. Also is it better to book on the cruise ship or independently???

We'll be getting off as you are boarding. We're doing the 5-26 southbound, arriving 4 days early and renting a car for interior sight seeing. I hope you plan to do that after your cruise - so much to see. We have also rented a car in Skagway and will drive to Carcross, Canada and back. Last time we did the train in Skagway and it was excellent and not to be missed! in Juneau we are hiking the East trail loop at Mendenhall Glacier. Most of our planned excursions are sightseeing, hiking rather than adventure types, but you'll find lots of info on those on the boards. We'll be sure and save you some goat cheese Pizza! Have a great trip. Laurie

Thanks for the info. I wish we could do land tour as well but are unable to do you work schedules. I am a law enforcement officer and it was like an act of congress just to get the days off for the cruise. The other couple going with us is a project manager for a general contractor and has to get back as well. Maybe when we retire. I have heard the train in Skagway in great and we definitely want to go fishing while we are there. Our wives don't want to but they are going to go on a helicoptor ride or something while we are fishing. I also have heard that the Lumberjack show in Ketchikan is very fun. Thanks again. Anybody else out there with any suggestions.

Ketchikan has the best fishing - in my opinion. The Lumberjack show is geared more towards kids, I'd spend my time elsewhere. We've never done the helicoptor - but hear they're great. Also the Misty Fjords flights in Ketchikan are highly recommended.

Don't go through the cruise lines as they really gouge you, we heard that from everyone! We went up last year and booked our tours in Skagway through Southeast Tours. we did a lot of research before booking. Southeast for Skagway anyways was rated as the best. We went on their Yukon Horseback, there was a group of six of us...

The vans picked up up at dock side and drove up into the Yukon Territory...I can't tell you how beautiful it was. The drive up through the Whitepass was magnificant, our driver was very well informed and gave up the lowdown on the Klondike history. We also say bears on the side of the road and were able to stop and watch them, we had other picture stops along the way as well.

The tour in was about 1.3 hours to a really cool wilderness ranch where our horseback guide took over. I have riden a lot, but my friends hadn't , the horses were great and we all agreed that none of us had seen so much beauty in all our lives!

EMERALD LAKE is soooo beautiful, we saw it from the road when we drove in but our trail ride took us on the mountains and hills right behind the lake for a truely breathtaking view. We stopped to glass wildlife once we got back into the hills and saw wild sheep on the mountain sides which was a thrill to look at through the spotting scope the guide had. The horses were so well behaved and gentle, they were also very fat and not what I had seen at other ranched I had been at.

Back at the ranch after the ride we all relaxed and visited at the cookhouse for great cake coffee. The guide Jonni was born in the territory and was really wonderful. We all agreed we lucked out, I think we only paid about 150. each and had a 5.5 hour tour which was really great. We were well taken care of and would highly recommend to anyone...

Hope this helps...
