I saw a post regarding this and was wondering what it is. I have searched the Carnival web site and found nothing. Do you pay to join? What are the perks of being a member? I know I could call but I am trying to avoid that.

I can only assume by the lack of response that nobody knows about this. I thought for sure someone here would have some sort of knowledge concerning this.

I know that there are different levels that you can "buy into".. I know that for $5000 you get 20,000 points... I think that you can pay $3500 for 14,000 points and there is another "level" that you can buy too!

Some of the "perks" may include a bon voyage gift (this is generally Chocolate Covered Strawberry's), you get priority embarking and debarking (we've used both, and they do work really well..) If you are on a ship that also has CVC on it, there are A LOT more party's with FREE (open bars) that you can go to with the possiblities to win what I consider are some really great gifts (a week at a resort in Mexico (pretty good to me!!)) My parents got a bottle of champagne anytime that they asked, a new tote bag, lanyards and there were some other things that I can't really think of...

Like I said in my last post on another thread about this, we didn't get these perks in July on the Inspiration because they had no clue as to what it was, but my parents when on the Pride in Sept and came back raving about the club and said that they had a TOTALLY different experience than us and they DEFINATELY will be buying back into it they enjoyed their time sooo much...

Other's have said that they think that they pay MORE for their cruise... Fortunately last year, we were able to have a little more freedom on when and where we took our cruises and so we pretty much waited for teh deals to come to us.... We don't use our points for balcony rooms as an inside guarentee is good for us and we can use less points for the same cruise that others are on and still have more points for more cruises in the future.... Case and point... We took a CHRISTMAS cruise this last year... Booked at the BEGINNING of December... Left on the Legend on the 19th through the 27th.... Prices for an inside guarentee were going for $999 a person plus all of your port charges... We used just over 5000 points (it was something like 5120 or something like that) for an inside guarentee 3 weeks before the cruise sailed.... That comes out to $1250 ... For 2 of us... And that includes the port charges... We didn't take the insurance (that's $100 per cabin (another "perk")) Sooo.... $625 a person for an inside guarentee and we think that we did pretty good because we ended up getting a 4E room on the 8th deck .... We couldn't complain as the people at our table bought their cruises MONTHS ago (back last Feb. and June) and they paid $850 for an inside guarentee... I think that it's worth it in some cases..

If you have the freedom of cruising maybe at the last minute or even during the school year then you can find some pretty good deals... but I do think that if you are bound to your vacation time then it may or may not be the right thing for you because of when they have their sales...

I hope this helps you to understand things about it a little more.. If you want to know more let me know and I'll see what I can do... :)

Thanks Alwayzcruising...this gives me a much better understanding of the club. I do have one more question. When you buy let's say a block of 5000 points...when you use those up do you have to join again?

No, I wouldn't say that you *HAVE* to join again... Something to consider though... My parents only have about 3,000 left for a cruise... This isn't enough for the 2 of them to take a cruise (realistically you need probably at least 5,000 points per cruise on average IF you are staying on the lowest deck (or lowest guarentee) and doing a lot of conserving of your points!!) Soo... When we go to Alaska in Sept, they are going to buy back into it and get another 20,000 points.. But if they want to cruise before then with only their 3,000 points, they will have to pay a larger price for the "extra" points they will need.. Example... Say they do only have 3,000 and the cruise they are looking at would cost them a total of 7,000 points.. THey would have to buy another 4,000 at "land price" (which I believe is at a higher rate, and you don't get the "extras" that they offer you when you buy in on the ship!) But from what I'm hearing you have 5 years to use your points and if you don't want to buy back into it I don't think that you would, you could just purchase the "extra" points that you would need to finish off your points and be done with it... Sorry this is so long.

Any cvc members sailed on ship without the cvc service onboard?
Were you given the priority debarkation? Any upgrades?

Hi shipdogred,

We have sailed on ships (2 of them now, including the Legend and the Inspiration) that have not had the service onboard... Our first encounter wasn't too good with it and it made my boyfriend not want to come back to Carnival once we were out of points... Unfortuanlely, I think that a lot of what happened to us was due to the fact that we were on the Inspiration in July of 2005 during Hurricane Dennis and were given the opportunity to get off the ship or stay on for "credit" ... First let me state, that we did get to use the Skippers Club while in Tampa and did get on the ship in a very timely manner, they were already boarding so we "weren't one of the firsts..." but it only took about 30 min. total to get on once we got to the Skipper's Club... When they sent out a letter saying that we could get off the ship and get our monies back or stay on and get credit towards another cruise, we went to the purser's desk where we REPEATEDLY asked the purser if we were going to be able to use points and get the xx% off of our next cruise, since we after all had paid for this cruise with points... She went behind the desk, supposedly, called "Miami" and came back to us stately a positive yes that we would be able to use our points and get the xx% off of our next cruise... And of course nothing was open cause it was a Sunday and so we couldn't call CVC to verify that this was going to be the case, so we had to go on her words... Once getting back to the states after the cruise, we eventually after many emails back and forth were basically told NO, you're not going to be able to use points, you have to use cash.. That's just a side note to what you are really asking and I just want people to be aware that what you pay with for one cruise and if something happens you may not be able to pay the same for the next cruise....

As far as your question goes.. When we were on the Inspiration and the Legend we did get "strawberries" as an Bon Voyage gift in our room .. We were also given the opportunity to get off the ship early at the debarkation time, however, both times we opted out of it only because our flights home weren't for HOURS... So, we just stayed on the ship as long as possible... But as far as any of the "other perks" including, Mexican Parties, CVC cocktail party in addition to the Captains cocktail party, the tag on the door, and VIP tags for our luggage, we didn't get any of that..

I will say too that on the Legend we booked a 4A guarentee and whether we got upgraded because we are in the CVC membership or not, I don't know, but we did end up with a 4E category (the highest category 4 that we could get on the highest deck, the panorama!!!) We thought that that was pretty cool...

The CVC is only sold "on certain ships".

Just like with 'time share', it is a good deal for some and not a good deal for others. Only you can decide if you would receive a benefit from this program.

We sat through the presentation on the Spirit and found it not to be a good deal for us. We get better rates through hubby's employment. I also have a tendency to shy away from any deal that "must be bought now".

The pros are many that have already been listed and many people enjoy those.

The cons are:
1. The company that you are doing business with is not owned by Carnival. Carnival simply leased them the Carnival name and space on some of their ships. Carnival is in no way responsibile if you are not pleased with the deal.
2. The company reserves the right to change the number of points for any cruise at any time. You have no say once they have your money.
3. Upgrades are not guaranteed. I have read lots of folks who have gotten them and lots of folks who have not. Just remember what a salesman tells you (and after all, they are still just a salesman) is not law. Get it in writing.
4. Several state Attorney Generals are not pleased with this program and have placed restrictions on their residents. This should be a red flag. If you are a resident from one of these states, when you tell the salesman where you are from, they have (in the past) tried to get cruisers to use another address from another state so they can sell then this package. I have yet to hear of a salesman telling a potential customer "sorry, you live in _______ I can't sell you this package." Now there may be some honest salesmen out there, but all I have read is the opposite, so far. Attempting to circumvent the laws of a State, should be a red flag to avoid this company. Sorry, I don' t have a list of the states with this restriction.
5. As for all the other "perks" (companion airfare, discounted land vacations, etc) I have read good and bad about both. Again, it depends on your personal situation.

One of the big draws was the VIP Check In (Skippers Club). Now that Carnival has added that to the Platinum perks, if you have cruised more than 10 times with Carnival, you already get that.

The bottom line is to make a completely informed decision. Again, what is not a good deal for one person may work perfectly for another.

Hope these tips help. Personally, I love Carnival and cruising and (if this program could have gotten me cheaper cruises) I would have done it. It just turned out not to save me any money.

Hmmmm, sounds eerily similar to a time share arrangement! Wouldn't touch it with a 10 foot pole!

Cruzman:

The timeshare company ICE is the one they selected to initially roll out this product.

However, timeshare is not a bad word. I have several friends who have used their timeshares for years and have been very pleased.

All I have ever said is for folks to make an informed decision. If it is right for a person, great. If it isn't, great. It is a personal choice.
