You pay for points - 25¢ per point. The first level is 14,000 points ($3,500). Then you use the points to purchase a cruise. It does not matter which cabin you pick, you get priority embarkation and priority debarkation. You also receive special discounts on land based vacations.

I am on a couple of other cruise chat lists, and the CVC has been a topic of discussion on one of them.
From what everyone on that chat says, I would really check into this club before you sign up for it. I would say that almost to a person, they have had problems. They say that when they sign up, they're told the points are worth a certain amount, but when they try to redeem them, the value has gone down. In addition, to a person, they have not been able to get their free companion airfare, and most have not been able to book the "free" resort vacation because the dates are al=COOLways sold out through their expiration dates. One other thing I learned is that the CVC people are not Carnival employees, although they wear the Carnival uniforms on the ship.
I'd research it before I signed anything.

This is not a timeshare. However, it is run by ICE which runs timeshare companies.
1. Carnival does not own or have any connection with the Carnival Vacation Club. Carnival simply has rented them space on some of their ships and rents them the use of the Carnival name.
2. Residents of some states are not allowed to purchase these packages. They have been restricted by the Attorney General's office. If you are a resident from one of these states, salesmen have been known to ask you to use a different address (from another state - in laws etc) so they can sell you these packages....red flag for me
3. The points needed for a cruise are not set. Regardless of how many cruises the saleman tells you that $3,500.00 will purchase, the bottom line is that CVC controls how many points each cruise will take.
4. You must sail on one of the Carnival ships that they sell this CVC on, in order to purchase it. You must purchase it while on the cruise. Red flag for me.
The bottom line (just like timeshares) is that this works for some people and doesn't work for others.
My advice would be to only purchase this if the cruises alone make it worth your money. Don't depend on airline companion fares or discounted land vacations to make it worth the money.
