Casa De Campo

Casa de Campo is a new port of call. In 2004 Celebrity, Carnival, Costa and Crystal have Casa de Campo on their itineraries. Located in the Dominican Republic (which shares the island of Hispaniola with Haiti) Casa de Campo is a large private resort as oppose to a town or "private island." The main attraction of Casa de Campo as a port is its golf courses. Other recreational options are limited but tennis, skeet shooting, and horseback riding is available. (All such activities must be arranged through your ship's shore excursions.) There are very few opportunities for independent travelers. Shopping is available at the fabricated villages of Marina and Altos de Chavon.

The new port has been controversial. Complaints that have been reported include the inability for cruise passengers to use the resorts facilities including pool and beach areas, limited shops and restaurants with high prices (most of which are closed on Sundays) and late in the day arrival times to Casa de Campo limiting outdoor activities. Ships dock outside the resort area where there is no cruise terminal and no services. There are no attractions accessible by foot. Passengers must be transported by bus to the resort. Nevertheless, Casa de Campo is a popular resort, considered by many as one of the better resorts in the Caribbean and cruise lines are reported to have plans to expand facilities and activities there.

Been there and still can't figure out why they go there. It seemed to me that on our cruise not many people even left the ship.

I just got back from Celebrity Constellation last week - of all the ports we visited, Casa De Campo was the least appealing. With so many islands to choose from in this region, I do not understand why go to this port either. While I am glad we looked around as we hadn't been there before, I have no plans to go back.
The cruise director even made a joke that night in the theater - "Everyone now knows the translation of Casa De Campo - Stay on the Ship!"

If you are an avid golfer, this is a nice stop. If not, take a snorkle or sailing adventure at this port. The shopping is week at best, at Aspen-like prices, although the Coffee Shop in Altos Chavon offered the best deals on Caribbean coffee I've found anywhere! At $5-$7 per pound, we stocked up!

Bluntly put ,Casa de Campo is at best a tourist trap. Celebrity should really consider its excellent reputation and drop this stop. Just got back from the Millennium and to a person everyone who went into town if you can call it that was cheesed off.Should have taken the advice given me and stayed on board!

I agree that Casa de Campo was not a very good port. The Marina was empty and quiet, some stores and cafes andthats about it. Some people on my cruise told me that it was not worth the trip, that we should stay on board. of course I did not listen to them. Bad move.
The golf is supposed to be great but not much else. Celebrity should really think the decision over and drop this port.
