CCL/RCL vs. Norwegian Norway

Hi guys,

I've noticed some dirt cheap prices for the Norway $299/pp online. And we're thinking of taking her for an anniversery get away around Jan or Feb. It would be our 5th cruise (3 CCL 1 RCL) but our first on Norwegian. I've heard a little about Freestyle Cruising and it sounds right up our alley...but I was hoping for some advise on how the lines compare to one another, and if the Norway is a good choice.

THANKS
Shannon

S and C, first let me say, I have cruised on 6 NCL ships but not the Norway. We will be taking her in January. She is the only NCL ship that does not offer freestyle so if that is what you really are looking for I would suggest you price Sun, Sky or the Dawn. The Dawn does cruise out of NY which would make me freeze just to think about it, but lots of passengers are excited about the itinerary. There is no way to compare the Norway with CCl or RCL as the ship is a beauty within herself, but very different from your standard ships. If you decide to cruise the Norway be sure to ask around before booking a cabin. She is one of the few original class ships left in the water thus her cabins are not cookie cutter like other ships. You can get an inside cabin with only about 110 sq feet or a suite with over 400 sq ft. The larger cabins are huge in comparison to anything you probably have seen but the smaller ones are barely big enough for 1 person. Remember that little bedroom being built in the houses of the 60s and 70s? Well that's what you will get including the bathrooms. I may be sounding negative and that is not what I mean to do, I think you should know what you are getting. We personally can not wait to sail her. Apparently she is a rare piece of work that you will never see again. No plastic, all real quality. Nita

If you are into nostalgia, and a feeling of stepping back in time, then you may enjoy the Norway. Remember she was on her way to the Far East and retirement when 9-11 occured and they kept her here. They had stopped really refurbishing the Norway and I am afraid you will find her more worn and needing paint etc.I recall our tiny cabins (1988)down twisting ,turning corridors and the fact that the ship needed a good airing out even then as the ventilation didn't seem to be too great. We had a nice trip but the Norway is 40 years or so old and looks it. However, we had the best time in the dance club called Dazzles and closed it every night,(actually morning. like 3 or 4 a.m.) The food at that time was great and the entertainment the best.

If you do decide on the Norway do not take the minimum categories as they are tiny upper and lower berth cabins in the bowels (seemingly) of the ship.

Kathy, when was the last time you cruised her? I think she has been refurbished to some degree anyway. certainly you are correct about the higher price. With the prices being so low everyone should try for a cc or higher cabin. At least get a TA that can check the cabin you select before you make a payment. I remember cruising on the Caribe many years ago and then a second time. The cabins were small to say the least, the ship very small and the entertainment provided by the crew staff. Actually better than you might expect. What the ship had, as well as low prices was nostalgia. She too was a ship designed when classes traveled the high seas. Of course she wasn't the Norway, but the basic trans Atlantic ship for the "OLDEN DAYS". We loved her for many reasons. Again, like the Norway she only visited 3 ports so we had lots of sea time which can be super fun. As long as you are prepared for what you are getting. All cruises offer something special. NMNita
